Vengeful Dissent In The Classroom

The first article that is being analyzed is, Attribution Theory in the College Classroom: Examining the Relationship of Student Attributions and Instructional Dissent. The researchers were studying the relationship between student’s attributions of their instructor’s behaviors and their own three forms of dissent: expressive, rhetorical, and vengeful dissent. These three forms of dissent are characterized by the attributions the students’ make about the instructor. Attribution theory explains, “that people simplify their perceptions of social reality by making judgments about what causes others to act in particular ways” Fundamentals of Media Effects (Bryant, Thompson, & Finklea, 2013, p.101). In this article vengeful dissent explains, ‘that students are creating messages intended to ruin an instructor’s reputation, ensure that other students do not take a course with the instructor in the future, and/or attempt to have the instructor lose his or her occupation for the perceived wrongdoing (Goodboy, 2011). Nowadays, students use “Rate My Professor” to rate and review past professors online to let peers knows if they should take the class or not. All the DILs were instructed to type out the hurtful message they remembered receiving from the MIL and afterwards they talked to their husbands about the message. The participants had to perceive the hurtful message on a scale of not at all hurtful (1), to extremely hurtful (7) and did not cause emotional pain (1) to caused a great deal of emotional pain (7). The results for this hypothesis included hurtful messages about the over involvement being too high in the DILs family life or spousal relationship.
