In the year 1999, Venezuela experienced a major flood, devastating the poorer areas in the capital city, Caracas. The government also was having a disaster of its own around the same time. The Venezuelan people were trying to overthrow the government in a coup. The streets were very unsafe and although unsuccessful, it did cause a lot of turmoil. A small time prior to these events my friend, Kendal, and her family had moved to Venezuela. Her father works for the United States government and had just taken a new job there. It was the first time Kendal and her family had moved out of the States, so this natural disaster and governmental instability came as quite a culture shock within their first few months out of the States. “I can only imagine my parents,” Kendal said, “it was a little hasty maybe [moving back after the evacuation], also this is the first time we left the States, and [the first time] they were living overseas, so the idea that a natural disaster could happen, kind of shook my family.” Lucky for her family, they lived in a nicer area of the city, so there was little to no damage done to their apartment, “We were on one of the top floors for safety reasons anyway, so it [their apartment] was fine,” she said. There were many other areas of the city that were completely destroyed though. I asked Kendal about her experience with seeing the devastation first hand, and she replied, “I was little, but when we talk about it, like if it comes up now, I can just remember, like any natural disaster, certain areas of the city were really destroyed, especially the ‘shanty towns’, where the poorer people lived were really destroyed, we weren’t affected as bad, but they were destroyed and hurt.” Luckily Kendal and her family were safe, and at her young age, she didn’t have to see the really demolished areas of the
