Vela Summer Student Internship Paper

I am writing to express my interest in the teaching internship for Vela Summer Scholars Program. As a first-year student interested in teaching, I joined Ed Pros at Amherst College, which is where I first heard about the Vela Scholars Program. I was drawn to Vela’s focus on exploratory learning and emphasis on strengthening connections to the community. At Amherst, from volunteering as an ESL conversation partner at the Jones Library to becoming a music tutor for the Wildwood Elementary band, I am eager to become more involved in the community at Amherst. Vela would be an ideal place to connect with middle school students at Amherst Regional Middle School and explore teaching.

During high school, I tutored my classmates in math. After working

Summer 2015 Internship Internship Field Journal June 7, 2015: What were your first thoughts and observations when starting the internship? Having had the opportunity to work with the Hoop of Learning Program during the previous summer session, I held on to the assumption that my duties were going to remain the same, however, that was not the case. The changes between my experience last summer and this summer are that I am no longer a work study student, thus I have been given more access to the colleges’ systems, which is used by faculty to access student files. Since having access to student files I have been able to partake in the students’ academic career from the start to their completion of the program.…

Why Your Child Should Take a Gap Year In Europe“1.2 percent of U.S. college freshmen deferred admission to take a gap year in 2011” (Baker). A gap year is a year that a student takes between finishing high school and starting university. This year can be used for whatever a student wants it to be used for, whether that be fishing on a trawler in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, digging wells and erecting schools in South Sudan, or maybe farming in Nebraska, the choice is theirs. Many studies have shown that gap years create cultured, well rounded and more academically motivated students. America needs young graduates right now, this is common knowledge.…

They inspired me to believe that attending Archbishop Mitty will provide me with the skills that I need to reach my academic goals. My brief interaction with the teachers during shadowing and open house provided me with an insight into the close student teacher collaboration. To me such interactions are important because, it fosters an open environment for students to excel.…

Diversity is a gift that must be appreciated not only in our communities but also in our schools. Unfortunately, diversity is something that is often not appreciated in U.S. society and in many cases, in U.S. schools. Although I still have much to learn, after my clinical experiences at Loyola I will commit myself to educating my diverse students by supplying them with the support and resources they need to succeed in school. As a future teacher, it is my goal to furnish students, especially English Learners (ELs), with a quality education in which they are applauded and valued for their diversity. To begin, an educator has a special responsibility to advocate for and seek out social justice.…

Over my time at GirlForward, I had experiences that caused me to learn about education policy, being an educator, ESL and refugee students and nonprofit’s work. To start off with, the purpose of this internship was to learn about educational policy in a real-world context. At the beginning of the semester, I was nervous about how much I was going to learn about educational policy at a place that I had been at for a year in the education division. While I may not have learned a lot about educational policy on a national level, I learned how educational policy can be implemented at a small level in a nonprofit. I was very lucky that GirlForward and specifically, Emily and Ashley, allowed me to pursue my interest in math education at GirlForward.…
