Vegan and Vegetarian Lifestyles Vegan and vegetarian lifestyles have been around for centuries. These lifestyles trace back to ancient Indian and eastern Mediterranean societies. There are many different categories to these lifestyles, - the two common types are vegan and lacto-ovo vegetarian lifestyles. A vegan does not consume meat, meat by products, and animal products. A lacto-ovo vegetarian does not consume any meat. Developing a vegan or vegetarian diet can lead to health and environmental benefits.
 Vegans and Vegetarians have lower risks of certain diseases. They consume no meat, and eat lots of fruits, vegetables, grains, fibers, seeds and nuts. Due to these factors vegans and vegetarian diets have lower intakes of fat. With less fat, they have lower risks of many diseases. Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of saturated fats, and cholesterol “Eating fewer animal products often result in lower cholesterol pressure, reduce body fat, and reduced risk of cancer” (Owen,). However, vegans have lower chances “ a major contributor to coronary artery disease is dairy products such as whole milk, butter, cheese, and lard” (World Book Science Year). Their diets consist of high amounts of fiber “Diets high in fiber-rich food may reduce risks of cancers” (Farley). With elimination of meat, vegetarians and vegans experience less heart problems “ lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease”(Anonymous).
