Vegans have lower LDL cholesterol levels compared with other vegetarians. LDL is the “bad” type of cholesterol that accumulates in blood vessels, causing blockages. These blockages increases the risk for heart attacks. This means that lower LDL levels decreases the risk of heart attacks and for this reason, vegan diets reduces the risk of heart attacks. In addition to lower cholesterol levels, vegans have lower blood pressure compared to other vegetarians. High blood pressure or hypertension hardens the arteries, causing atherosclerosis, leading to stroke, kidney disease, and the development of heart failure.
