Vasemmistoliitto also known as the Left Alliance is a left-wing political party in Finland. Vasemmistoliitto is the fifth largest party in Finland. Their goal is to have an equal, righteous and ecologically stable world. They used to be a communist party as you can see from their name. They have been quite successful electorally, receiving around ten percent of votes of the parliamentary election every four years.
History
Vasemmistoliitto was founded in April 1990. The Finnish People’s Democratic League and the Finnish Women’s Democratic League founded the party. The party began to stray away from the traditional communist ideal and started to think more about freedom and stability. Still though deep in their roots they headed towards challenging the global capitalism and wanted equality for everyone. The party performed very badly in the EU parliamentary elections in 2009. After the weak performance in the EU elections, Martti Korhonen stepped down from the chairman position. In June 2009, Paavo Arhinmäki who was the vice chairman of the party, stepped in to the chairman’s role.
After the parliamentary elections in 2011 The Left Alliance party has always been a government party. Two ministers had been elected to lead the new government party, Congressman Paavo Arhinmäki and congressman Merja Kyllönen. Arhinmäki was the culture and sports minister while Kyllönen was the Minister of traffic. Immigrants are all allowed into Finland without problems. All immigrants have the equal right to come into Finland. This is also means that they can travel and choose their place of residence without anyone intervening. Regardless of their wealth or ethical background all immigration happens with equal rights. The Left Alliance looks at their impact also being more global. They used to be more against the joining into the European Union, some people in the party accepting it and others not. The younger generation in the party is more into the fact of being apart of the EU. NATO is another thing that is still thought of having only a negative effect onto Finland. The Left Alliance has even said that they promise a NATO-free government. Finland joining NATO would only have an effect on the well-appreciated status that Finland has a neutral country. Bringing NATO to Finland would make Finland take apart in all NATO activity from having their own military base in Finland to making Finland join in NATO’s war
