Throughout my high school cheerleading career, I have had five different coaches. I have classified them into The Mom, The BFF, The Nazi, The Babysitter, The Crazy One, and The Ideal Coach. Each one made a distinct impact on cheer at TCPS in their own way, positive or negative, because of their actions and attitudes. Each category is specially designed for each coach I’ve had and their demeanor towards the cheerleading squad.…

Scholastic Scrimmage is a supportive community of scholars who always look forward to challenging themselves every week at practices and at competitions. My love of Scholastic Scrimmage comes not only from the competitive fun but also from this group of intellectuals who want to continuously find the limits of their knowledge and break those limits. The only problem was that these scholars did not feel bound together as a unit/club and the chemistry between us was low. I became captain of the varsity team in my junior year and have since worked to increase this collaborativeness by establishing that players would be on the same teams in practices and competitions to grow as units instead of free radicals with no direction. This creates…

Do you think of a bunch of girls who just shake their pom-poms at football and basketball games that yell a couple of chants? Although that statement is true, being a part of the cheer culture is something you can’t say you know about unless you’ve been on the team. That may sound elitist, but how can you judge something without trying it? Cheer hasn’t always been under the best light, especially with cheerleaders almost always playing the ditzy, bitchy role in most movies. I asked my team what are some of the disadvantages and advantages of being a part of the team, and I can’t say that I was surprised with their responses.…
