I scored highest in the reading/writing section in the VARK questionnaire, which most definitely makes sense. When studying for tests and exams I always create my own separate study guide just so I can see the information in my own format. When memorizing spelling and vocabulary words when I was younger I would continuously write the words and definitions over and over again until I finally understood what I was trying to learn. I’ve also always learned better when being assigned textbook pages or reading handouts, compared to getting up snd moving around the class. Currently I’m working on a career project for one of my high school classes and I have to write three pages about my future line of work. Currently I’m creating an outline of all of my requirements with all my answers just so it will be easier to write the paper when I’m ready. …show more content…
I spend a lot of time in my classes asking questions to make sure I have a complete understanding of the material. In past English classes, we always held debates or discussions about the reading assignment we were currently working on. This especially helped me exceed my understanding because not only was I able to share my interpretation, but I was able to hear different view points from my peers, resulting me in seeing the assignment in a new lighting. In the past I have recorded what my professors say during lectures. This has largely helped me because I can always go back when I’m studying so I know exactly what my professor was saying in a past

Growing up as a kid I never really enjoyed reading and writing. It was and probably will always be my least favorite subject, nothing against you my lovely English professor, but I just don’t enjoy it. The only time I really enjoyed reading as a child was when I got my first leap pad and I eventually destroyed it and it was probably within 2 weeks of getting it,…

I currently live in a small beach town right outside of Jupiter, Florida known as Hobe Sound. It’s a “drive by town” as I would describe it. There really isn’t anything there would attract or gravitate people to stay there; its better to just look at it out a car window well passing it. It is currently about six hours outside of Tallahassee, Florida. This seems really long, but originally I signed to go to University of Mississippi and later realized that being more than ten hours away from home was to much for me.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

In regards to my writing process, there have been some central strategies that I have developed over time and some strategies that I have had for as long as I can remember. For example, one skill that I have developed from high school has been to annotate, mark up, and take notes throughout my readings. I found that taking notes really helps me, not only to remember what I read but to go back and be able to point out something in my reading easily. In addition, it helped me understand the readings better.…

    Essay On Shared Inquiry

Shared inquiry is a discussion-based method of learning that has been developed, refined, and advocated. Shared inquiry is closely linked to the idea of reading and discussing the Great Books, if those texts are understood to be the record of a vigorous and continuing dialogue of ideas across time and place, into which contemporary students can enter as active participants. Because the variety of opinions expressed in the group discussions central to shared inquiry helps students consider the range of possible interpretive meanings that such texts can sustain. Shared inquiry is widely used in public schools, colleges, and community book groups to enhance the reading and discussion of outstanding written works. The core of shared inquiry practice is the focused discussion of the ideas in outstanding texts by groups of students who respond to questions from the discussion leader and from each other.…

Combined with the best practices that Santrock gave, there are numerous ways to have students increase their writing abilities to be ready for college and whatever they may find in their future. In Santrock’s Educational Psychology and Zumbrunn and Krause’s article “Conversations with Leaders: Principles of Effective Writing Instruction,” best practices for writing in the secondary English setting are provided for teachers in order to aid in their student’s progress of learning the skill of writing. Thomas Newkirk stated “The house of literacy has a thousand doors, and all you have to do is find one of them. One way in. One book.…

Whichever job or career the students decide to take, they will surely have some kind of work that will require these skills. Also, having excellent reading and writing skills will be extremely helpful to know, especially in college, because most college courses will call for the students to have a firm understanding of those skills. For most, if not all of the classes that a student will take in college will require them to read and/or write at least one major assignment. Regrettably, studies have shown that students are not prepared to read, write or think at college level. According to a recent national survey conducted by the educational testing organization ACT Inc., high school teachers believe that with the material that they have taught their students will be enough for them and that they are ready for college level work, but according to the university professors they surveyed, they are not.…

I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. Throughout my academic career, I have taken and been successful in a large number of English classes. In high school, my writing followed an academic format, mostly writing towards a prompt. Although I was able to gain writing practice, I never received a large amount of feedback that I could use to help myself in the future. Similarly, when I started college I practiced different forms of academic writing, structured around a prompt and focused on the end goal of a good grade. However, in college I was able to start gaining useful feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of my writing that I could apply to later assignments.…
