Variations in art that I have previously worked with involved reading short classics, poetry or portions of literature and developing artistic ideas revolving around the themes. For example, Robert Frost, Stopping by a Snowy Evening, could be incorporated with the theme of painting snowy aspen trees. To create this painting, I would have the children tape of vertical tape strips to mask of where they would like the aspen trees in their painting. Once the tape is in place, the children would proceed to paint the spaces that has not been covered by tape. Once they are happy with the composition and colors of the painting, the tape is then removed and the trees can be created by adding in black lines to create the aspen trees bark and knotty appearance. The purpose of this art was to involve the use of literature with art, developing a love for both reading and art.
Another example of art that includes a cultural perspective that I have helped children accomplish was each child drawing and tracing their hand, coloring it according to their heritage and adding details that distinguish them as individuals, such as rings, jewelry, nail polish, watches, etc. The hands were then cut out and assembled in a large circular shape demonstrating how we are all individual yet connected.
