A lot of the jobs that are available in Varadero are related to the tourism industry so there’s a lot of involvement. The locals may not always be happy to have all the tourists in their city but they put up with them because that’s their job. It’s similar to what happens in other Caribbean places that tourism is a big part of their economy. From personal experience I’ve seen the Cubans try to bring in their own meaning of place by selling their homemade goods. Their reasoning for selling them is to make money but it does give the tourists a chance to see some of the local culture. For the most part being a tourist in Cuba it is easy to go there and not see much of the authentic Cuba. Making the choice to stay confined within the Cuban resorts will give you an experience you can get at many other resorts in the Caribbean. So the perception that tourists have of Cuba might not be much of what the real place is actually like. It was mentioned earlier that the strong cultural pride would be enough to keep that from happening. Another possible reason could be because of what all happened with the US when they first cut their ties. That’s enough reason to not let them come in and take over again so they don’t end up with another economic downfall.
