As for me, the most familiar sound of water is the one of rain. I have lived in southern China for a long time, and the rain of it is part of my memory. The sound of rain varies. Slight rain sings a pitter-patter when they drip down from the sky. The tiniest sound of rain is like a whisper in the ear, so gentle and soft that makes people feel peace. It can also be a background music, a beautiful light music being played around us. Heavy rains usually come in summer. Sometimes it beats on roofs and sounds like a drum. Sometimes it pours down and I can hear a “ plonk-plonk-plonk ” sound. It is no longer background sound but foreground when it becomes a torrential rain. Water drops down at regular intervals, and slight sounds of “ patter… patter… ” come into my ears now and then. It is always covered up by other sounds like my typing on my keyboard and the moan of the van. When I turn on the tap, water runs out and raps on my hands. Unlike rain drops, the sound of tap water is always mussy with no rhythm.
Other than these two sounds, there are variable sounds of water in our daily life, for example the sound of boiling water. It is neither too loud to disturb people, nor too slight to let people ignore. The kettle begins to whistle when the water sings a “ blub blub blub ” , these two kind of sounds together make a special chorus. I love the song, because it wakes memories of my mother and makes me feel the tranquility and peace of life.
Water sounds are everywhere. They come from rivers, streams, toilets and many other places. I am not interested in water sounds until I really listen carefully to them.
