Dallas is an aggressive, tough character. His clothes are rough-looking and his gestures are often arrogant and non-caring for others. He also smokes a lot which adds to his tough character.

Dallas’ answer to the question “What are we gonna do?” is “Nothing legal man.” The Van Morrison “Gloria” fits the scene as the song allows the director to show the characters walking away without having a long silence. The boys react to the fight in a very calm way. They are not scared or overly surprised by the fight and stay and watch the fight. The live in a dangerous world were violence is very common.

Another reason from them not recognising them is that they didn’t aggravate them like Dallas. They would also expect all greasers to aggravate them and Johnny and Ponyboy didn’t so they wouldn’t recognise them as greasers. One thing that Cherry and Pony have in common with each other is that the both don’t like fights. They also both don’t purposely try to annoy or aggravate other people. Pony is very disappointed as he told Cherry Sodapop is a ‘dropout.

11. Why is Dallas surprised when Johnny tells him to leave her alone?
Dallas is surprised when Johnny tells him to leave her alone because he is the leader of the group and usually tells them what to do, not the other way around.
