Van Inwagen talks about three major positions concerning to free will and each of its mysteries. First, van Inwagen stated that free will is incompatibly responsible with determinism which this position is called incompatibilism. Van Inwagen finds the mystery with a combination of free will and libertarianism which he uses the example of Jane telling the truth about Alice or staying silence but her neural split according to her pulse may go either deciding one of this actions. The mystery involved here is that if this position is true, how can this situation of Alice be related to free will when she doesn’t have the control to either tell the truth or not due to the external causes of her pulse not by her choice.
