Van Gogh's Starry Night

Improved Essays
Van Gogh used all of the elements of art in “Starry Night”, but some call more attention to themselves than others. Line, for example is a prominent feature in this piece. Form, however must be searched for. See it? It’s hidden in the small houses tucked away under the night sky. I notice that color also dominates this piece, with strokes of blue littering the scene, with a beautiful contrast of yellow to represent stars. I see many organic shapes with the dark figure of the cypress tree, and also some geometric shapes with the houses down below. Van Gogh uses space to show the vastness of the night sky against the small town. “The night sky in the background occupies nearly two thirds of the canvas.”(http://art.scholastic.com/issues/09_01_12/book#/4

Also, he painted the brush strokes in opposite directions so it can get the texture and look of the ocean. I saw that on some of the brush strokes curved it to get the wavy look of the ocean. On the first boat he added an astonishing amount of detail to make it look realistic, from the strokes on the brush to the less than a millimeter wide dots. The works of his early Dutch period (1883-1886) are sombre-toned and sharply lit. The first impression when I observed his painting in this period is dark and monochrome. There are light parts, which are concentrated, thin and shining out from the shadows. Van Gogh’s usage of a limited of colors and his play of dark-light tonality creates a dramatic effect. The Potato Eaters (1885)…

Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…
