Valvano's Speech

The speech I chose for the assignment was Coach Jim Valvano’s 1993 ESPY’s speech, which was made while accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Coach Valvano, was fighting bone cancer at the time, and one may say that he gave one of the best speeches on perseverance and strength. While looking frail compared to his “normal” state, Valvano was able to bring the room to tears and demonstrate his enduring strength through his words. The first thing that builds the power of Valvano’s words was his stage presence. Although he had to be helped up on stage by his friends, Valvano was able to stand tall and smile despite his condition. Valvano was able to move around the pedestal, while also having the stage disappear. No longer was Valvano on a stage, …show more content…
Throughout the speech, Valvano is able to leave quotes that forced the viewer to think deeply while listening to his speech. Valvano spoke of what makes a full day, that “you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.” Throughout his speech, he is able to make the viewer laugh, think, but also cry. His capability to not only say an ideology, but then have his audience live out his words in the short time of his speech is special. Another demonstration of his knack for ideology is when he tells his audience to never forget “Where you started, where you are and where you’re going to be.” And how by doing so, one can reflect on life, while also moving towards goals and dreams. Valvano then uses that quote to then build a chronological plot and organization to his speech. He structures his speech in such a way that he is able to show how he was able to have success as a coach, but also how he is able to push through adversity. Valvano then finishes with his plan for the future, and where he wants to go. He unveils his plan for a research foundation and is able to build up to that moment through the use of chronological structures, thus showing why his plans for the future have meaning to him and why it should mean something to the

Leslie Marmon Silko states her view on the significance of oral tradition in the Pueblo community. Silko begins her written speech by saying, “The words most highly valued are those spoken from the heart, unpremeditated and unrehearsed,” (467). Storytelling lies at the heart of Pueblo culture, for it brings their heritage together no matter the time or distance (Silko 470, 479). Pueblo oral tradition differentiates from English writing; oral tradition challenges academic writing. Silko’s written speech uses a number of Pueblo influences: written and oral expression, narrative form, identity, and language; in order for her audience to experience English in an abstract organization that holds the practices of oral traditions.…
