Valuing Diversity And Injustice

Improved Essays
Justice can be defined in many different ways as every person may have a different perspective of what justice truly is. Valuing diversity and challenging injustice are two key features that can help to define what justice may be. These two features can help a person to have a better understanding of what justice may be and what the good of a just society can do for it’s people. To value diversity is a large issue in today’s world. To not value a person just because they are different than what a given person might be use to can go against all that is right. It can exclude that person and prevent them from being accepted the way that every person should be. As the world has continued to move ahead, it has also begun to become more accepting …show more content…
Valuing diversity is huge in helping to bring justice in as there was a large period of time in which there was only one elite class. If a person was not in that elite class they received no equality. They were viewed as the scum of the earth, no matter the situation. While challenging the injustice of a situation can help to make the situation less likely to happen again. It helps to make people think about their decisions and the consequences that they may hold, making them less likely to do the unjust action they might have done otherwise. These two features together have the ability to promote justice in every situation that may arise. They are both capable of helping people to be more open and also to have a better understanding of what justice can be, and how effective justice can be within a …show more content…
This can compare to today by having a set code of laws in which the people must follow in order to help keep the society just. Without these Twelve tables, or without or sets of laws today, there would be minimal order, along with no punishment for anything a person might do that could be considered as unjust. Another thing to be considered among the topic of justice would include the paterfamilias, who were the male head of the household and held complete authority over everything that was done (Backman, 179). Knowing how powerful men were in this time period, this was something that I had expected to learn, however, I find it to be unjust. Even though the man was thought to know what was best for everyone, it took away the rights of everyone else. They had no say in their lives and had no control over what they may have to do. They were expected to meet a certain standard and always listen to what they were told. In conclusion, I found it interesting that in this time period, it was viewed that what the male was doing was viewed as what was considered to be the just thing to do in this time period no matter how we may feel about that same situation

In the introduction to his book, The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality, Walter Benn Michaels introduces his views on why diversity has come to be more appreciated than in times past, as well as his main point and goals for his book. Michaels organizes his introduction with an approach that allows a reader to fully understand his goals for the book, but uses a style of writing that may prevent an audience without extensive knowledge of the subject to fully grasp the meaning of Michaels’ message on diversity. Michaels begins his introduction by discussing The Great Gatsby. In which, a penniless man, Jimmy Gatz, transforms into a rich man that is an epitome of the American values of the 1920’s but is still unable to win…

Justice is very important in society and there are many different things that go into the idea of justice. There isn’t one simple thing that makes justice work, it takes a variety of different concepts to not only form a system for justice, but put it into action. For example, in the document a law states, “If a woman wine-seller does not accept grain in the right amount of weight or to less of weight, she shall be convicted and thrown in the water.” Even though women had an expected role of being wine-sellers, they were still viewed as untrustworthy, according to the law stated above. To my dismay I soon apprehended that I was not as open-minded as I had presumed that I was. I had not developed a culturally competent way of thinking until I entered into Wayne State University’s School of Social Work program this fall. During my tenure at this diverse school I cultivated personal relationships with a multitude of people from different races, who possessed diverse beliefs and religions.…

Being diverse is without a doubt perceived as decent. Especially, when the process is regular, clear and the distinctions are certain.
