A value is what someone believes is the most important thing in life. Values played a huge role in Roman society. Rome was an extremely violent empire. They spent years fighting to expand their empire, and the slaves they took hostage were forced to be gladiators. Some of the emperors ruled with a vicious hand, and they executed people left and right. Others were kind and only cared about making Rome a better empire, but most of the time rulers were violent. The Romans enjoyed violent acts, and were encouraged to attend gladiator fights every week. In Ridley Scott’s movie Gladiator, Marcus Aurelius told Maximus that he should be the next ruler of Rome. Commodus's inelegant ascension is way more smooth in the movie than it would have been. Fiction is never obligated to the facts but to the essence of history and should you wish to create a fabricated account of Commodus murdering his father and dying in the arena that's fine, but you should stay as close to the manner of how it would happen as possible, which itself is greatly interesting. In the movie there is no evidence showing Commodus killing his father Marcus…

In the historical epic Gladiator directed by Ridley Scott, a scene that helped to portray an important idea was the ‘Re-enactment of Carthage’. The purpose of this scene is to show Maximus regaining his identity of who he truly is, a leader. This scene stood out to me as behind a mask he was not known for the great leader, contrasting with earlier scenes where all soldiers had great respect for Maximus where now he had to prove himself to regain the respect. Dialogue, camera work, actor’s visual delivery and musical motif worked together to show the process of Maximus regaining his identity as a leader.…
