Integrity - Upholding the values and mission of UHS, the University, and Self. * The mission of UHS is a decorative paraphrase of my answer to a common question I have been asked every semester of being an RA, “Why did you apply to be an RA?”. By working in a first year community, I strive to create a knowledgeable and approachable presence of myself for all residents of Campus Village 2 so they can learn and explore what SJSU has to offer them. I understand my role as a resource and take advantage as a way to expose residents to opportunities of student involvement and concepts to assist through their academics. Whether a first year considers to change their major or not, does not change my interactions with them pertaining to SJSU’s mission;

I am no more a student of SJSU than they are which means we are all college students living new experiences in San Jose. The reality of the fish bowl effect is recognized when an RA sees residents outside of the residence hall or even off campus, at least that is how it happened for me. Both the polo and presence of an RA hold power and understanding this can often lead to being place in a sticky situation. I am a role model, mentor, resource, and a friend to any resident which is a different persona than Briettny Curtner, a twenty year old battling social anxiety while approaching graduation. It order to grow within this position and as a person every day, I must be aware and adjust myself appropriately for those who watch me as if I am in a fishbowl because who I am as an RA is more important. Thankfully, there are parts of being an RA that need a little personality especially when bonding with residents and this is how one can be human in this position. For the next semester, I will continue to be aware of myself no matter what community I am in as a way to maintain a certain level of
