I believe there is one example of how I have aligned the values and ethics of the social work profession to a practice life experience. This past summer I was a camp counselor at Dickson Valley Camp. It was such a great experience because I got to work with children. One thing I love about camp is that the children have the opportunity to not only learn activity skills like swimming, climbing, and archery, but they get to learn about life skills like patience, creativity, and compassion. During my time as a camp counselor, I had to deal with many conflicts between campers. For example, I had a small group of children that consisted of two sisters. My goal as a camp counselor was to incorporate service and help these two sisters address their social problem and provide them knowledge to overcome their issues. I believe it is a perfect time at camp to teach children to learn to solve challenges on their own. I wanted to be fair with both sisters because I did not want to cause issues. So, during lake time, I pull the two sisters aside and talked with them about their fighting. I explained different techniques and methods that could prevent future fighting. For example, I told them while they fighting they need to give each other a chance to take a breather from each other like walking away, listening to music, writing down some feelings, or exercising. I ask them to figure out the best way to calm down before attempting to solve the problem. I explained once everyone is calm, then begin to talk and state the problem. I told them it is very important to be honest and admit their role in the conflict and encourage them to use “I” statement to express their …show more content…
I explained that apologizing is important to strengthen and repair their relationship. I believe as a future social worker is it important to understand that value of human relationships. It is important to help guide people to strengthen their relationships in effort to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, social groups, organizations, and communities. I told the two sisters that they needed to come up with a solution to help them improve their relationship. For example, I told them to find activities, movies, music, or something that they both like which can help their relationship. I stressed that the two sisters need to improve their relationships because God choice them to be sisters for a reason. I explained that friends come and go, but family is forever. I believe the two sisters left camp with life skills and ideas to strength their relationships with one
