During the first seven weeks of the internship, there have been many valuable skills learned. There are 3 large and valuable skills that have been learned during this time. The first skill learned is how to take an assessment and create an individualized and comprehensive treatment plan. I have had experience creating comprehensive and individualized treatment plans while in classes but has been a valuable skill to learn to do this based off of a real patient assessment. The second skill learned during the first 7 weeks has been to notice when a treatment plan needs to be adjusted and how to make these adjustments. This skill has allowed me to be able to notice when treatment is not benefiting the patient as much as it should and how the intern …show more content…
Areas for improvement include confidence in my ability to come up with ideas for treatment session, to improve confidence in the ability to chart on sessions, the ability to give verbal directions, the ability to plan out sessions that are going to use all of the time allotted without running short or long, time management and the ability to remember patient’s names and what room they are in. During the beginning of the internship, I was struggling to come up with new ideas and original ideas for sessions with each of the patients without just repeating all of the session she had seen the supervisor complete. I have been working to be more creative and really take a look at the patient’s goals and interest and come up with the best activity for the session. Since this is a new way of documenting, I have had to get used to how the facility documents. I have made a point to work daily to improve this documentation by having the supervisor look back over the documentation and provide feedback on what can be improved for the next time. During the first 7 weeks of the internship, there have been many patients who have been visually impaired, this has required that I provide verbal directions as the main form or the only form of direction to these patients. The verbal direction was a difficult task to figure out how to explain each step in a way the

Clinical Context & Experience I completed my final two shifts on 11/24 and 12/1 at Sharp. The unit had a pretty large census both nights, so we were fairly busy both nights. During this shift I had to notify the doctor twice and felt the most relevant journal topic was advocacy. The first night I had three patients which included a 84 year old man who sustained a hip and right shoulder/humerous fracture from a fall at home and a history of HTN, CKD, MI with coronary stent placement, and diabetes, an 86 year old woman admitted for rapid A-fib with history of TIA, HTN, CHF, and rheumatoid arthritis, and finally a 35 year old woman who was being discharged following her treatment for polynephritis. During my final shift, I cared for a 71 year…

I am writing to express my interest in the teaching internship for Vela Summer Scholars Program. As a first-year student interested in teaching, I joined Ed Pros at Amherst College, which is where I first heard about the Vela Scholars Program. I was drawn to Vela’s focus on exploratory learning and emphasis on strengthening connections to the community. At Amherst, from volunteering as an ESL conversation partner at the Jones Library to becoming a music tutor for the Wildwood Elementary band, I am eager to become more involved in the community at Amherst. Vela would be an ideal place to connect with middle school students at Amherst Regional Middle School and explore teaching.…

In January 2016, 637,067 homeless citizens were accounted for in the US. Out of those 637,067, 4,000 were accounted for in Virginia. Homelessness in Virginia has gone up 4.2% in the last three years. Aren’t those facts just a bit unsettling? When I heard we had to a Capstone Project, I knew homelessness in VA had to be incorporated into my project.…

In many classrooms across America today, race and ethnicity are very much on the table. Teachers dream of seeing their students discuss difference in a constructive way. Some educators actively encourage their classes to get outside their comfort zones and confront the country’s racial history, but I ask myself after reading McIntosh’s Interactive Phases of Curricular and Personal Re-Vision Model, how much was race and ethnicity practice in the classroom long ago when I was in elementary. I can remember when I was in 10th grade my history teacher showed the movie of “Roots” for a project in the month of February. Of course, if you have ever seen the movie “Roots”, it is a very long movie broken into 4 parts.…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

This was also highlighted in PDP 1:1 as an area that needed development at the start of module 1. It is useful having the time to reflect and evaluate on areas of weaknesses and strengths as it provides a goal to work towards. One goal decided upon was communicating with patients with a more confident approach. In order to achieve this the student had to stop building barriers and develop interpersonal skills; this is one of the main factors identified by the Department Of…

There have been challenges so far, but I believe they have made me stronger and more confident in the work that I am doing or will do. I am very eager to begin having more interaction with clients now that I have completed the hotline portion of my internship. My supervisor, Tonya, has explained that she thinks I am ready to start doing more forty-eight hour interviews and holding group sessions. I believe that these situations will give me the confidence for similar future experiences. During my time at the agency thus far, I have noticed that a lot of emphasis is placed on the care and assistance of the women in the shelter.…
