Valnet Inc Reflection

When I submitted the article to the editor at Valnet Inc, I had hoped that my time had not been wasted; instead of eating dinners with my family for a few days, I had incessantly sifted through numerous sources for content. What I could not foresee was that in six days, on February 29th, 2016, I would log into my account and perceive an exponential view trend approaching 400,000 reads of my work. At the end of thirty days - I had accumulated nearly two million views - which in turn - earned me my first paycheck as an author.
Having writing published was not an inconceivable idea when I had discovered Valnet Inc. in tenth grade. In fourth grade, I had found a website that enabled me to write and publish sports articles for leisure. At first, the website was unknown by the majority of people and had a minuscule number of readers. Two years later, the site would be purchased for $170 million by Turner Broadcasting. Under the new arrangement, all unpaid contributors, like myself, were barred from publishing content. When I received the email from my editor, Dave Morrison, I distinctly recall feeling flustered; I was too young, too inexperienced in how the world worked, to be cognizant of

My initial aptitude for storytelling has evolved to a professional level since I began authoring for this website - contributing to my eventual humility and empathy for the subjects of my work and for the people in my life. By having deadlines for an editorial to be due, I matured and became more adept at managing my academic responsibilities. Working at Valnet Inc has provided me with more than just a career; my involvement with the company has helped me become the sport editor for my school’s newspaper and it has equipped me with momentously valuable skill that I intend to use daily: maybe even in the NBA

Konrath is an author leading the new age of publishing. While he was himself a legacy published author he learned just how abusive and elitist the publishing industry can be. Konrath began self publishing, bypassing the "gatekeepers" of the industry to share his stories that the New York publishing houses felt unworthy. His success shows that the little guy can write for a living even without a large publisher behind them. Rather than keeping this to himself, Konrath has begun working with other independent writers to defy and expose the near thievery of legacy publishing.…

All writers are passionate about writing. Few writers, however, are fortunate enough to make a living off of their calling, or even to publish a book. In today 's modern world of consumerism, being an author on a full-time basis is no longer an option for more than an elite few. The majority of published authors are also productive members of society in another sense, taking on some other form of gainful employment. To find out more about this double life of an author, I managed to procure an interview with Struan Sinclair, who on top of being a professor at the University of Manitoba, has published three books, with a fourth currently in the publishing process.…

As a part of my engagement assignment I decided to build a connection with a faculty mentor. After reading through the staff listing on the Arizona State website I decided that I wanted to sit down and talk with Professor Gregory Bernstein. I chose Professor Bernstein, because I read in his bio that he had written and sold several scripts. Becoming a writer for television and film is my goal, and the reason I chose to attend ASU, so I was interested to see what advice he could give me about the craft. When I met with Professor Bernstein we discussed how and why he became a writer, what it takes to make and sell a script, and films that we each enjoy.…

Kallie Reckner GPS Fall Workshop Journal Entry #1 After reading chapter one of Bain’s book, I discovered that in order to be successful throughout my college career I must first take responsibility for my education, and second, find myself a mentor. In my opinion, the term “mentor,” can vary depending on who you talk to, so for the purpose of this assignment, I will give you my definition of a mentor. I believe, a mentor is someone willing to share his or her time and expertise with me to help guide my personal development. I also think my mentor should act as a soundboard. Having someone that listens to me would allow me to explore my thoughts and ideas openly.…

My interest in journalism stems from my role as editor of my school’s publication, the Boxer Roundup, a page of articles written by students about what is going on in our high school. The page is published every Thursday in our city’s newspaper, The Enterprise. I have been writing for the Boxer Roundup since sophomore year and have been an editor since last summer. By writing for and editing the Boxer Roundup I aim to highlight the positives that take place in my city and to help erase the view of the city as just a hotspot for crime and poverty. As a journalist, I hope to be able to bring to light the stories of those that may be overlooked and provide a factual account of events.…

I don’t know how I started writing in the first place. I still can’t quite believe I write. To this day, I look back to the past summer with a mix of wonder and disbelief, because venturing into writing has completely changed the trajectory of my life, when I signed up for my first writing workshop. I think luck might have been involved in this decision: truthless, ruthless luck. Somehow the planets were aligned the right way, and the right song was playing in my head, the wind was knocking right against the windowpanes, and I was right enough to click on the first weekly assigned reading and fall over, smack in love with the words of Ocean Vuong, or Terrance Hayes, or Toni Morrison.…

As the title portrays, the article is about technology’s impact on the younger generation. Twenge states, “I’ve been researching generational differences for 25 years, starting when I was a 22-year-old doctoral student in psychology” (Twenge). She goes on in the article to state her opinion about smartphones and to support it in a variety of ways.…

With all the hours I poured into my last essay, it felt like a slap in the face that they didn’t even send a “thank you for trying” letter. Moreover, how do some authors become so famous when I struggled to write a simple essay?…

GAY, umm, that word was overused last week, I believe. As many of you know, by now, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in all fifty states and some of the conservatives are already planning on moving North, to Canada and some South, to Mexico, disregarding the fact that both countries legalized gay marriage way before the U.S. did--really? Yes, that 's what I thought, gaps and everything, but it seems Mexico is not as homophobic as its macho persona or rather stereotype seems to picture it. I don 't know about other states, but in New York the joy was overwhelming.…
