Valley Humane Society: Personal Reflection

I have many passions. My school, my work, my family and volunteering. For the last three years, volunteering at a local animals shelter has been very important to me. I love being able to help things of all nature. The animals shelter, Valley Humane Society, is a no-kill shelter. I chose this particular shelter because I would be unable to cope with the knowledge that the animals only have a few weeks to live if they do not get adopted.
I am only able to volunteer at the shelter once a week due to other commitments. I am considered a full-time student at Las Positas College where I would like to major in chemistry. I work approximately 20 hours a week. I am a barista at Starbucks. All these commitments have taught me new skills and honed old ones, such as time management. I have learned to balance out my life so that I am not overwhelmed and still able to do the things that I love. It has also taught me responsibility and following procedures and making executive decisions. The animals at the shelter depend on me to feed them and clean their living spaces so they are not living in their own filth.

It has notes from the medical staff and from other volunteers for things to look out for. This step is very important because if one animal does not get along with another. They could get into a fight and hurt one another. Once checking the care manual, we look at the procedure list. This is where all the steps are listed to take care of the animals. You always want to wash your hands before you start caring for the animals. This is important to keep any contaminants from transferring to the animals that could get them sick.
