Valley Forge: Would You Quit? Fights turn into battles, and battles turn into wars. This is exactly why I am here at Valley Forge during the American Revolution of 1777 and 1778 (Roden 141). My enlistment is almost up and I need to make a decision to a question that might determine whether I live or die: should I stay at Valley Forge, or leave. Everyone is trying to tell me to leave before I die, but I have already made up my mind.I have decided to stay and fight for my soon-to-be country because the men are dying, General Washington is getting support from congress to fight in the war and survive during winter, and I don’t want to be a slave in my own country. I told the men at Valley Forge that I was re-enlisting for three main reasons. The first being that we cannot win a war if we do not have any men. Over half the men are sick and dying and we need healthy men( Doc A). In December there were over twelve thousand soldiers at Valley Forge. Now we have less than eight thousand. I want freedom and I am willing to die for it, whatever the cost may be. I want to be a free man in a country that is my own. We cannot get freedom without a war. People are telling me to leave, but I don’t see how I can. I came here to fight for freedom, not stay for six months and then leave when my country needs me now more than ever. I came here to fight, and that’s what I intend to do. I know why people are leaving. It’s hard being out here and not knowing if you’ll get another chance to see your family again. But we need to fight for our freedom so that we can guarantee other people will. If we don’t stay and fight, we will be like slaves in a country we cannot escape from.
