Data collection is done in many different ways and is dependent on what a researcher wants to know. After a problem is established, a solution is proposed and tested, and the results are reported and analyzed. There are some universally accepted methods, and the majority of these collect quantitative data. Tools are often established as reliable after they successfully measure an established and known standard (for example one might check to see if a scale will be reliable for measuring weight by placing a standard 100 g weight on it and seeing how close the scale reads to that true weight). When reading a research paper, it is necessary to consider the validity and reliability of the study being described. Validity means that a tool measures what it sets out to measure. There are several steps of validity that provide evidence of the quality of the study. Internal and external validity relate to the overall study design.
