Valedictorian Address

Students, administration, staff, family, and friends, welcome to the commencement for the Class of 2017, Hanover High School’s 125th commencement. Graduation is an exciting time... both an ending and a beginning filled with warm memories of the past, and immense dreams for the future. Now the question becomes, should we reminisce about the past four years, or instead focus on the next stage in this journey called life? We’ve waited impatiently for this day for many years, and now, we just want to hit pause, slow down, and enjoy the last fleeting moments before we graduate. After all, our lives will be forever altered after we toss our caps into the air. Before fervently throwing our caps into the air, we cannot overlook or forget the true significance of being the graduates of the Class of 2017. The Oxford Dictionary defines a graduate as “a person who has successfully completed a course of study or training”. Well, in our case, this certainly holds truth...but this only touches the surface

After graduation, we will follow our passions in copious different directions. Some of us will attend universities and technological or trade schools in the fall, while others will take a year off before pursuing higher education. Many of our seniors will be joining the workforce right after high school, and others will join the Armed Forces.
No matter what we choose to do, we must concentrate on enhancing our futures… we need to be tomorrow’s positive images. Class of 2017, it is up to all of us to make a difference, and to leave the best impression possible. Excellence is never an accident… it’s the result of rigorous work. Go forth, work unyieldingly, and attain excellence; the kind of excellence that will make your dreams into reality.
I would now like to read a reflective poem, Senior Year, written by Maria Balafoutas, a member of our graduating class:

A motif that haunts the months of college applications and preparation is the daunting idea of seniors entering into the "real world." An alleged, new realm of reality that discredits the validity of the last few years in high school, not to mention the three before that and all the experiences previously. This concept coincides seamlessly with the idea that college is a beacon of newfound adulthood. Even so, each student's differing personality, aspirations, culture and tribulations falsifies the belief that adulthood is that straightforward. Thus, in order to define the moment that marked my transition into adulthood, I must first define what being an adult means to me.…

9 years of memories, jokes, fails, and successes and I have learned so much over time. “Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.” When I saw this quote I instantly knew I wanted to write about it. Frankly I don’t know how to start this valedictorian speech, I spent countless of hours going through YouTube videos and google searches on how to make a valedictorian speech. It had to be inspiring, reflective, and relatable. While I can go on and talk about how we’re going to on to the next chapter in our lives and how wonderful this place is, I’m not, because it makes this speech just another valedictorian speech that most of you probably won’t remember or don’t even care about. Many see our lives as a book, a tree, or even a Rubik’s cube, but personally I think life is more like the marvel franchise. While there are various movies that are central around a specific character, each story overlaps which ultimately become the avengers.…

Maya Angelou 's “The Graduation” has many aspects that are similar to my road to graduation but there are several differences. Graduation can be seen as an exciting time where I get to move onto another stage in my life that will lead to new life experiences. Graduation feels like it 's coming too quickly, and I am not able to enjoy it. Graduating whether it be from middle school , high school, or college is a milestone that led me to new worries.…

The moment first generation students walk across the stage, receive their diploma, and shake the hand of the university president is the moment that they have proven every sacrifice done by their parents has been worth it, have proven the statistics wrong, and have inspired other siblings to accomplish their dreams. Graduation is the event many, if not all, first generation students keep on their back of their minds as one of the milestones they must accomplish as they complete their undergraduate careers. However, reaching graduation is not an easy task for any first-generation student. It comes with many obstacles that sometimes appear to be almost impossible to achieve. Poem in October is a poem about Dylan Thomas “mid-life” reflection of life at the age of 30. It begins as he wakes up on his birthday to the sounds of the sea and the sail boats knocking against the wall as they dock. While the rest of the town is asleep he sets out into the hills. Passing the gate which separates the town from the hill experiencing multiple changes of weather he begins to remember his childhood days with his mother. Touched by the memories he stats,” That his tears burned my checks and his heart moved in mine.”…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure.
