The experiment consisted of a total sample size of n=145 subjects all of whom were current GVSU students ages 18-28 years old. Inclusion factors for subjects included knowledge of their overall Grade Point Average (GPA) and had to be current GVSU students. Subjects were not eligible for the study (exclusion factors) if: they were non-GVSU students (due to inconsistent grading scales across universities), if they were incoming freshman (incomplete overall GPA), and if they did not know their current GPA. In A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, the idea that guidance is needed to help people who have falling in despair and they need to regain their sense of purpose. Chipping away at ignorance is needed so that the true potential of the individual is revealed. This ignorance is caused by the submission of the portion of society to a higher power who abuses said power. Grant Wiggins in the book A Lesson Before Dying, has started to lose his purpose of staying in his little town and teaching in the plantation school. After reading both Smirnov’s and Afanas’ev’s versions of Vasilisa the Beautiful, I believe that they are not the same story. Firstly, both stories have a different function 2. In Smirnov’s story, function 2 happens when the girl is warned to not go to the lout’s house or the lout will eat her. In Afanas’ev’s version, Function 2 happens when Vasilisa’s mother warns her not to forget to feed the doll because it will help her. Emily Dickinson is well known for her unusual poems, however during her life she wasn’t famous till after she passed away when her family started to find 1000’s of her poems stuff in tiny spaces all around the house. Dickinson’s writing wasn’t well understood during her time, she had a uniqueness that was ahead of her time; she had an amazing use of symbols, capitalism, themes and tones in her writing which make reading her poems so intriguing.
