According to Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN and practicing neurosurgeon, “you are 100 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to have a serious allergic reaction to a vaccine that protects you against measles.” Combination vaccines, like MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), have been used without adverse effects since the mid-1940s. Opposition to vaccines is not a new concept. It has been around silently since the 1800s. The idea of injecting someone with a part of a cowpox blister to protect them from smallpox faced a lot of criticism. The criticism was based on sanitary, religious and political objections. Some clergy believed that the vaccine went against their religion. Some forgo vaccinating because they are scared to see if there will be an allergic reaction. This paper went over the basic history and issues present today, then went on to talk about the three pros of vaccination which included how they have saved children’s lives, the adverse reactions to vaccines are extremely rare, and vaccines protect the “herd” along with the three cons of vaccination which included how vaccines can cause serious and sometimes fatal side effects, some believe vaccines contain harmful ingredients, and how vaccines are unnatural, and natural immunity is more effective than vaccination.
