Smallpox and polio have been wiped out in the United States. Cases of measles, mumps, tetanus, whooping cough and other life-threatening illnesses have been reduced by more than ninety- five percent. Immunizations prevent tens of thousands of deaths annually among elderly persons and those who are chronically ill (Meadows). Many parents are concerned that vaccinations lead to autism and are causing other serious life threatening health risks that could harm their children. The truth is there is no correlation between immunizations and health defects and parents need to be educated about the importance and benefits of vaccinating their children.…
In the last several years, much debate has been raised over the issues of child vaccinations here in the U.S. Various studies have yielded results that support both sides of the debate. At stake, is whether a parent can choose vaccines for their children, a decision that ultimately may protect the child, hurt the child, or possibly put others in the community at risk.…
We have all heard claims regarding the dangers associated with vaccinations. We have also heard numerous cases of people, specifically children, dying from illnesses that could have easily been prevented through vaccination. Whether we agree with the premise of vaccinations or we passionately oppose becomes irrelevant when we begin to consider whether the government has the right to mandate vaccinations. This week I read multiple articles discussing the recent decision to end personal belief exemptions for vaccines in California. Both articles address the anti-vaxxer’s movement, those opposed to vaccinations, as well as the pro-vaccine movement, those in favor of vaccinations. Coming from a scientific background, I am a strong advocate of vaccines as I know they are effective in preventing detrimental diseases. However, regardless of your opinion on vaccines, the question becomes whether or not the government has the right to mandate vaccinations. As you will see, this seemingly individual decision poses great social conflicts and concerns. At the end of the day it is an individual’s decision, but it should be…
Other experts believe that vaccinations have a high probability of causing autism or other serious side effects and are unnecessary. Parents who choose not to vaccinate their children, feel like this is a decision that they should have the liberty to make and if immunizations were as effective as they are portrayed, their unvaccinated children should not pose a risk to children who are vaccinated. Miller feels, that parents should not be obligated to gamble with their children lives (1). Miller states that in the United States, less than 1% of all reported hepatitis B cases occur in persons less than 15 years of age” (2). Therefore due to the inability to vaccinate high risk adults, they attempt to force vulnerable children to take the vaccination…
Anti-Vaxxers also claim that vaccines contain dangerous ingredients, and therefore, children should avoid them, lest they influence their growth. In contrast, vaccines are highly regulated and tested in detail before introduced to the public. Many claim that chemicals in vaccines, such as thimerosal or aluminum, are used in vaccines for less than honorable reasons. Instead, according to Elizabeth Forsyth M.D., chemicals are used to preserve and inactivate viruses within vaccines. Also, additives, known as adjuvants, increase a vaccine’s effectivity (Vaccinations 60). Although chemicals can be harmful to the body, vaccination ingredients are utilized for a specific reason and often increase a vaccines performance. In particular, Anti-Vaxxers believe the compound thimerosal specifically…
There’s always an argument on the news and on newspapers about children catching diseases and dying from them really often. Why is this happening? When All of these diseases are preventable by simply being easily immunized, why parents are not getting immunized their children, is it for religious beliefs or just carelessness. Whatever may be their reason is it really good enough? Because why would anyone let their child be able to catch and spread a deadly disease, so immunization should be made mandatory for all children, but with a previous analysis to each child.…
Johnny lays in his bed, ill with the measles virus. How? His mother took the chance that neither he nor any of his siblings would get infected with it, and did not vaccinate any of them. He will be sick for a couple days with a rash and fever. Johnny’s fate could have been easily avoided by a simple set of vaccinations. This practice of not vaccinating children could be very harmful to the well being of those unvaccinated and those around them. Along with that, it is easier on the child to not have to suffer through a potentially fatal disease. This is why vaccines should be mandatory for young children.…
One of the main arguments for the topic of vaccination is that it should be forced. There are a few main points for this argument, which include that crowd immunity is required in our society, it keeps our youth healthy, and that it does not cause many illnesses that anti-vaccination proponents argue for.…
Vaccines have saved many life's against many diseases. It should be said that most children are vaccinated with these vaccines by exposing a small dose of it to the body, making the immune system more likely to fight off the disease if they get it. Some schools say children must be vaccinated before they can go into public schools and some doctors won't treat them if they aren't. Many doctors have created vaccines for different diseases that affected people at different times. Some people think this has caused autism and metal problems in kids, but that has been proven wrong and it's safer with it. Today there are less huge diseases to fight off, but we can find every vaccine to cure it.…
“It doesn’t matter which vaccination you get, just get one.” With only about half of Americans getting their immunizations annually, there is room for a possible epidemic. According to the CDC the flu virus kills roughly about 24,00 people in America every year. Last year 145 children were accountable for those deaths, which was higher than annual average of 100 child deaths related to the flu.…
Measles, polio, yellow fever, varicella (chickenpox) and rabies. These are only exemplifications of diseases prevented by invented vaccinations (“Centers For Disease Control and Prevention”). Vaccinations have ceased the spread of multiple diseases and have saved countless lives over the course of history. Every person should be governmentally required to receive vaccinations in childhood and, in adulthood, give them to their children because of the potential that an unvaccinated child could spread diseases to a healthy one.…
“All 50 states issue medical exemptions, 48 states (excluding Mississippi and West Virginia) permit religious exemptions, and 19 states allow an exemption for philosophical reasons” (procon 9). In North Dakota some schools refuse to enroll students if their immunization records are not up to date. There are three different reasons students may be exempt from immunizations. The first exemption is a medical exemption, which requires a certificate signed by a physician stating that the immunization would endanger the life or well-being of the child. The second exemption is the religious belief exemption, in which a parent can sign a certificate stating that it is against their moral belief to get the immunizations. Last is the exemption stating that if you already had the chicken pox you don’t need to get that immunization. So although there exceptions to the rule, it is still mandatory to get immunizations in the public school system due to the increased risk of one child causing an…
There are so many children that could be saved from illnesses if every child was vaccinated. Even if your child is vaccinated if someone that your child has come in contact with is not it is still harming your child. To keep every child from getting sick and possibly dying all you need to do it have your vaccinated. Research proves that vaccinating your children not only keep them safe but others as well.…
The human immune system is the body’s way of protecting ones self from harmful germs and viruses. Within each individuals body we have white blood cells, which aid in the protection against disease. When these cells detect a germ the immune cells replicate, release antibodies, and then tag the germs for disposal. Afterwards, memory cells are creates so when the same virus comes back the body will be prepared. In order to fight against possible infectious diseases, scientists have developed vaccines, which have been proven to successfully decrease the rate of disease. Vaccines are a weakened or dead part of the actual germ that is injected into an individual. Just enough of the weakened germ is placed within the body…
You may be wondering why this is. There are many arguments against vaccines, some of these include risk of serious and sometimes fatal side effects, claims that some vaccines are ineffective, and concern about the ingredients used in vaccines.(procon.com) A lot of parents nowadays are arguing that the benefits do not outweigh the risks and they would rather take the risk of their child getting sick than them getting a serious side effect.…
