Chapter 3 – Discussion
Future perspectives

VTE is one of the major health problems that we face today, affecting millions of people worldwide and causing hundreds of thousands of deaths. These numbers show the necessity of good treatment and prevention of VTE. However, until now clear evidence for VTE prophylaxis guidelines is still lacking. This CAT showed that prophylactic anticoagulation in pregnant women with previous VTE does most likely not have a positive effect on preventing recurrence of VTE.

Several reviews and meta-analyses concerning thromboprophylaxis have been published, including a review by Greer et al.[ ]. Based on analysis of 64 studies, this review suggested that thromboprophylactic use of LMWH is safe and slightly effective

VDH can provide critical information to healthcare providers, including a fact sheet for managing patients exposed to or contaminated with radiation (Appendix 16) and instructions for collecting and shipping specimens for laboratory testing by urine bioassay (Appendix 17a for distribution outside VDH, Appendix 17b for distribution within VDH). For clinical management and care of patients with significant radiation exposure or contamination (≥ 1000 times background), DRH may refer healthcare providers, through the LHD Director, to REAC/TS. REAC/TS provides 24-hour clinical consultation for the medical management and radiation monitoring of radiation victims. A REAC/TS algorithm for managing radiation victims is presented in Appendix 18. VDH can also provide information to responders about PPE (See Section 2.10).…

They act mainly by slowing blood clot formation and thus preventing associated complications1.Their approved Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indications include prophylaxis and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and preventing complications associated with atrial fibrillation such as stroke2. For the past years, vitamin-k antagonist (warfarin) has been the primary treatment for a wide range of coagulation related indications3. However, limitations of warfarin have led to the discovery of a new generation of anticoagulants.…

Warfarin administration, which is a vitamin K antagonist, has been the primary precept for AF ablation anticoagulation as it is associated with lower risk of bleeding and stroke, while a new oral anticoagulant called Dabigatran, which is a non-vitamin K antagonist, has showed safety and efficacy outcomes similar or superior to those of warfarin regarding periprocedual stroke prevention (2). Furthermore, an evidence favor dabigatran over warfarin as it has an advantage of not requiring regular monitoring. However, the major concern of performing catheter ablation with Dabigatran is the risk of bleeding, particularly life-threatening bleeding (1,…

What Deep Vein Thrombosis refers to is simply the formation of a blood clot in the deep vein of the legs. When these blood clots grow they can break off and find their way to the lungs where they can create a sometimes fatal medical emergency called a pulmonary embolism.…

ROP is a multifactorial disease. Low gestational age, low birth weight, sepsis, oxygen therapy, respiratory distress syndrome, and blood transfusion have been suspected to influence the incidence of ROP. The most significant risk factors for development of ROP were low gestational age and low birth weight, as shown in many studies. In our study, low gestational age, sepsis, oxygen therapy, and frequency of blood transfusions were found to be risk factors for development of ROP independently. Meanwhile, sex, mode of delivery, birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, hypotension, phototherapy, duration of oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, and CPAP were nonsignificant risk factors…
