VIVA Assignment: Improving Text Evaluation And Speaking Skills

Decent Essays
This week was our VIVA assignment. The purpose of this assignment was to test our text evaluation and speaking skills. I was very confident while practicing for it. However, when the assignment began I was nervous.

A difficulty I had in this assessment was that I felt nervous and my nervousness affected my speaking abilities. For example, when the interviewee asked me about the Authors purpose for the text, I was so nervous that I started stuttering while speaking. Because my speaking abilities were low I believe that they could drastically affect my grade in any assignment even if my answer was correct. So, I need to improve my speaking abilities so that I could do better in future assignments and be confident in any life situation that

1.There is instructions for the first portion, but not for the speaking portion, so I will give this a score of 2. 2) There is a short instruction at the beginning, but there isn’t any written instruction for the short speech following the test. I think it is very fair and direct for the first section, but I think the speaking section needs to be explained by being written down. In any event, I give this a score of 2. 3)…

I definitely have to change quite a few things to make my performance at least good if not the best in future. Among them, one thing I definitely need to change is “practice” giving a fair amount of time to develop a good memory until it reaches the point of perfectness while presenting or delivering. “Practice makes man perfect”-universal quote triggered into my attention now. I believed I had fairly good voice tone/volume, my non-verbal communication like gestures, body language, and eye contact wasn't bad. Similarly, I used a word fillers approach to cease fast flow of speech delivery to adjust with audiences’ conceiving capacity/ability and keep up the connection.…

Once I’m able to do this, I think that skill will carry over past the class and help me in my specific career path which is one of the most important things about the class to me. Another idea that the book mentioned that I think could be good for me is using movement to minimize anxiety. “You don’t have to stand perfectly still behind the podium when you deliver a speech. Walk around as you make some of your points. Movement relieves tension and helps hold the audience’s attention.”…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

Assignment four, visual rhetorical analysis, helped me develop oral communication skills. For this assignment, we were asked to deliver a presentation, and it was also the first official presentation that we made in front of the whole class in this course. To prepare for this presentation, I first referred to the paper I wrote for the topic, which was warning biohazard, and tried to take out the thesis and main points, then, based on the thesis and main points, I wrote an outline of the presentation. Next thing was creating a powerpoint. After that was just practicing.…

Research Assessment Task – “Speeches Through the Ages” Rhetorical Analysis: A comparative analysis of both John F. Kennedy’s (JFK) Inaugural Speech (1961) and Barack Obama’s Democratic National Convention Speech (2004) investigates the similarities and differences in the linguistic styles employed to address the American public ‘through the ages’. Both speeches create unity by addressing the audience as, ‘we’ and ‘us’. This is an appeal to pathos as it reduces the distance between the president and the public.…

Final Field Project For this assignment, I chose to interview my boyfriend Michael Hook. Throughout the time we have dated, he has always been someone I’ve admired and continuously pushes me to become a better person in all aspects. I wanted to interview him because the story of his company, to me, is pretty commendable and an interesting topic to discuss. Considering we have been dating for over four years, there was no research needed to prepare for this topic; we have discussed his job various times. For the opening, I began by thanking him for agreeing to participate in the interview and taking the time to answer the questions fully and to the best of his knowledge.…
