VIA Survey Of Character Strengths

I got very interesting results from the VIA Survey of Character Strengths. My results established that gratitude is my top strength. I feel as though these results are extremely accurate. At a young age I learned what it meant to be grateful. At two years old, doctors discovered I had a very rare and severe heart condition. As time went on I began to value life differently. I learned that children with my condition normally do not survive utero, hearing that caused me to become grateful for everything in my life. Therefore, this survey is 100 percent accurate when stating, “You are aware of the good things that happen to you, and you never take them for granted.” I appreciate every new day and never view my life as any less worth of living due to my condition. If anything my heart condition has pushed to become the person I am today. The results also stated, “Your friends and family members know that you are a grateful person because you always take the time to express your thanks.” This is also extremely accurate, without my family I would not be where I am today. They are my support system and everything more. I am so grateful to have a family as wonderful …show more content…
While applying for college scholarships last fall, I came across an organization developed to help students going to college who suffer from cardiac issues. The Students with Heart Foundation is a nonprofit organization and all employees are volunteers. The president developed the organization for the sole purpose of helping others and sharing his own cardiac story. I hope to someday work for an organization such as this one; to show people despite the medical odds you can still live a wonderful life. I also want people to be to grateful for every struggle they face in life, because the way people deal with hardships ultimately affect their everyday outlook on

“The Proud” brought a difficult time to the land of the Seven Swamps, especially in comparison to his antique father. He brought the demiogre to his knees, crushing the hearts of everyone in the land. Under the support of his wife, a flower, The Proud gathered his men and went to the House, where he spoke evil against the demiogre. He said that the unfortunate man was born into the lowest class and was not chosen for his position properly. The role of doctors in both the treatment of cancer patients and their families plays a critical role in helping both the patient and their family deal with the stress, burden, and, in some cases, grief during and after treatment. This is evident in Jerome Groopman’s novel, The Measure of Our Days, especially in the story of Matt. Throughout this story, Groopman demonstrates this role, as both he and Dr. Samuels give Billy hope during Matt’s cancer treatments, and aid him in accepting Matt’s inevitable death. Throughout Matt’s first treatment, Groopman and Samuels provide a source of comfort and hope, allowing Billy to combine both his faith in God and his faith in the doctors, and their ability to help Matt heal, as when he first hears Matt’s diagnosis, where he “pressed his hands together in a powerful upward arc…

One might say the main focus of The Chosen, by Chaim Potok, deals with the friendship between Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders. Early in the book, Reuven’s father observes the adversarial relationship between the two boys and tells his son that it would benefit both youths if Reuven tried to cultivate a friendship with Danny. Quickly the tone of the friendship manifests itself as a tone of mutual self-improvement. Reuven and Danny provide outlets for the other’s feelings, thoughts, and aspirations. Throughout the book certain passages reveal that Reuven’s father slowly becomes less capable of providing the same outlet that Danny gives; and Danny’s father, for reasons of his own, never has.…

). The brevity of this moment is depicted by the small, same-size panels that show Bruce and young-adult-Alison in almost the exact same position in each panel, giving off the feeling that the two pages filled with these panels only describe a second or two because nothing much changes. This is a reference to how young adult Bechdel felt about the conversation her and her father were having. She had hoped for an open conversation that would form a bond between them over their experienced queerness. Instead, her father, marked by the oppressive gender binary, cannot give her that, and although he does provide her with a little information on his experienced queerness refuses to truly encourage the conversation.…

In the Peter Weir film, Dead Poet’s Society, many characters are exposed to the idea and benefits of living according to their own desires, rather than other peoples. After this exposure, character’s are forced to choose which path to ultimately embark on. Robert Frost’s renowned poem, The Road Not Taken, explores similar situations and themes as well. The poem is so spectacular because of the fact that the message relates to almost anyone, and therefore the speaker is very versatile. While many characters definitely could have fit in as the speaker of this poem, Neil Perry’s story draws significant parallels making him the best fit for the speaker of the poem.…

Each of these projects further proved that health is an intangible form of wealth that if handled with proper care could lead to individual empowerment and fulfillment. Through these experiences, I learned that I wanted to spend my life helping people maintain and obtain the wealth associated with good…

Over the last few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to read and gain new insight into moral and performance character. Based on the reading, Lickona and Davidson characterize moral and performance character as intertwined: “Performance character must always be regulated by moral character to ensure that we do not do bad things in the pursuit of our goals, and moral character always needs performance character to enable us to be effective in carrying out our good intentions.” (Seider 2012, p.128) As I read the headlines on different website and see the interaction with students in school and out of school I get it. The need for moral and performance character in our schools are at an all-time high.…

I thought the Survey of Character Strengths was an interesting survey to take. My first and second strengths were not particularly surprising to me, however my third was not what I necessarily expected it to be, but I am certainly not unhappy with it. All three strengths are values I have always admired because I have grown up watching my parents and older siblings showcase all three. I have consciously tried to emulate their example regarding these strengths and it was intriguing and encouraging to see all three show up in the survey. I was glad to see which strength showed up as my top, as kindness and generosity are especially important to me.…

In Chinua Achebe’s A Man of the People, a recurring subject that causes issue is the subject of power in the country. In the time in which the book is set, Nigerian politics was ripe with corruption following its independence from Britain, who had been its territory since 1885, and with independence came greed for power from the elite of Nigeria. Although the book is set in an unnamed country, Achebe is most likely basing the events of the book on events that took place in postcolonial Nigeria. The main character, Odili is a young young teacher from a small village, early in the book he meets Chief Nanga, who happens to be his former teacher turned Minister of Culture for the African country. Odili is invited to Chief Nanga’s house in the capital…
