“V-J Day in Times Square” by Alfred Eisenstaedt (1945) is a picture well-known across the United States and possibly as well as in other countries. People see the photo as romantic and impassioned, showing love during a time of celebration. However, some also believe this public display of affection could possibly be sexual assault. During this time in the photo, people were gathering and celebrating over the announcement from the president that Japan had surrendered and they have won the war. It was a moment of celebration taken too far by the sailor. The crowd of people in the background saw it as a passionate couple lip-locking in celebration, but today people see it as sexual assault.
The famous photo, “V-J Day in Times Square,” depicts a man in a sailor’s uniform passionately kissing a woman in a nurse’s uniform with a crowd of people surrounding them in the street of Times Square in New York City, New York. The sailor and nurse’s uniforms are outdated and nothing in comparison to what they look like today. The crowd in the background are also dressed old-fashioned, women in their midi-dresses and leathered pumps and the men in their casual button-ups and trousers. Most everything in the picture is outdated and not what it is today. The focal point is centered on the embraced couple since the two are the

Some people still see it as a time of celebration. Yet, they would not like it if some random stranger invaded their personal space and kissed them forcefully. Other people do not understand why no one ever noticed that it was sexual assault until recently. Though the picture may have just been a mistake, it still portrays the sailor sexually assaulting the nurse. As it was previously stated earlier, no one will truly know what had happened at that moment except for the ones that were

Kurt Vonnegut’s Armageddon in Retrospect is a book composed of both short stories and essays about war. Vonnegut was a private in the U.S. Army’s 106th Infantry Division during World War II and was captured by the Germans in mid-December of 1944. In this essay, I examine the ways in which the bombing of Dresden is conflated with sex. Specifically, through a close examination of key metaphors and images, I show how the violent "deflowering" of the virginal city reflects the book's larger view that war is a kind of rape or sexual assault. Known as The Florence of the Elbe, Dresden, Germany, became known as one of the most royal capitals in Europe, in which acclaimed architects designed the Zwinger, Hofkirche and Taschenbergpalais.…

The Patriotism and Penis art in Boulder by Hannah Nordhaus, was a very interesting article to read as a resident of Colorado, The Patriotism and Penis art in Boulder covered an older news story from December 27 2001. The news story discussed how only a few months after the September 11th terrorist attacks people across the US were brandishing the American flag a lot more, so in reaction to the terrorist attacks, some local employees at a public library in Boulder wanted to hang a 10 by 15 foot American flag in the building's south entrance. This trouble began when they asked the library director Marcelee Gralapp if the could follow through on the idea, her response was that the flag would compromise the library's “objectivity” explaining to…

Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

The Hell You Say: Critical Analysis In this article originally published in the New Yorker, Kelefa Sanneh is giving us a very objective view of free speech and the two sides to it. He points out that on one side the liberals are arguing that there should be some kind of limit put on it so that people don’t get offended. On the other hand conservatives are arguing that free speech is one of our most fundamental rights and there should be no restrictions placed on it. He illustrates the arguments made by the two sides but fails to make an argument of his own and write a coherent essay.…

The notion of sexual harassment or assault is nothing new to any person on this earth. Sexual assault, as defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “Illegal sexual contact that usually involves force upon a person without consent or is inflicted upon a person who is incapable of giving consent…” (Merriam-Webster). Although it seems rather obvious, some individuals may not be aware that their actions could be considered sexual assault and could hold severe criminal consequences. This leads to the question, then, what about religious customs and/or community beliefs in regards to sexual assault?…

My first official memory of New York would be taking place in the Bronx, summer of 2003. I was five years old sitting outside on the steps of our apartment building in the Grand Concourse, which is known as “The Project Village”. You could hear the Spanish music that blasted from the other apartment windows, and see the smaller kids like me getting ready to have relay races and actually enjoy the sun, and my favorite which was seeing the coquito man come up the hill with his truck. A coquito in english is simply an icee, and during the summer for one dollar it was a gift sent from above. I was actually running down the hill to meet the coquito man, who we called Papa Juan, and I was stopped by a police officer.…
