The video Misunderstood Minds explores five different students who suffer from learning difficulties. The first story takes a deeper look at Nathan who was diagnosed with a phonemic awareness problem. This deficiency left Nathan with an inability to distinguish between the different letter sounds that form words. One struggle for Nathan was that by the time he was done decoding individual letters that made up words left him struggling to comprehend what he had actually read.…
As the princess gestured to the right to show the man which door to choose, she was thinking about the lady that was in the door and about the tiger that was in the other. The princess didn’t like the lady in the door. she didn’t really want the man to go spend the rest of his life with her. So she did what she had to do. The door she told the man to choose was the one with the tiger.…
Quickly looking up, he saw his wife wrestling with the wild beast. On instinct he reached for his rifle, but instead of shooting he smacked the side of the beasts head with it. Murlock glanced at his wife as he recalled what happened only a week ago. Murlock went out that day hunting when his wife unexpectedly asked to tag along. They had happened upon a stream and decided to take a drink.…
Emelia Seybert PSY 442 19 November, 2015 The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat Oliver Sacks I love Oliver Sacks and all of his interesting tales from his clinic. Previously I have read “Hallucinations” and “Awakenings” by him and I must say “Hallucinations” is one of my all time favorites. He has a way of taking subjects that one would find in a textbook and turning them into living breathing people with vivid and imaginative writing.…
Under the Rug Two weeks passed and it happened again. It was a rainy windy day, so there was nothing to do outside. So instead of going out, I stayed home to watch some football. I was fifteen minutes into my game when I started hearing noises under the rug and the chair.…
"Out" called the ump. Everyone scared to death we hear the score. 5-4 visitors, 2 outs, top of the seventh. Our whole team jumps to the fence when Daniel Messe gets to the batter's box. " Hopefully Danny doesn't get striked out" the team says.…
The Man who Mistook His Wife for a Hat is a collection of short stories telling of people with abnormal brain disorders. These stories are written by Oliver Sacks, who has either witnessed the affected people and how their brain works, or has heard about them, and transferred these stories into short clinical tales, some of which being published in other books, such as ‘Witty Ticcy Ray’ and ‘Reminiscence’ in the London Review of Books. Sacks is the common character throughout each of the 24 stories, although he is not the main character. The main character, instead, changes throughout each story, as they are the people whose lives and disorders are written about by Sacks. Each tale in the book has their own theme, but they all are very similar.…
In The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, there are two case studies of proprioception. Proprioception is described as our “sixth sense”. As Dr. Oliver Sacks explains, we have five senses but there are other senses that are considered secret-senses or sixth senses which are just as vital as the other senses but go unrecognized. “It is the awareness of the relative position of the trunk and limbs, derived from receptors in the joints and tendons.” For normal people, in normal situations, these secret-senses simply do not exist.…

Perhaps it was the way that her attitude and finesse for something greater drew me in and got me so closely attached. Every word I listened to with genuine care for her well being, hoping that I wouldn't hold too tightly. Restrain is what I forced myself to, hoping that this past issue wouldn't be so much of an obstacle and that for once I could be allowed to cherish a blooming love like I had long before.…
Throughout history there have been many instances where opposing cultures have been involved in wars due to miscommunication. It is evident through past events that conflict is avoidable through communication and negotiations to understand issues that may be present. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart illustrates the importance of communicating well with one’s associates or peers. Achebe highlights the value of the Ibo to prove that communication between cultures limits the risk of societal clashes.…
The two stories “Breaking through Uncertainty- welcoming adversity” and “Neighbours” are both stories about how big the benefits are when you take risks. The first short story is about how a skydiver must overcome his own uncertainty, to save himself from certain death. While the other story is still dramatic, just in a different tone; it's about a young woman, who has to decide whether or not a friendship is worth standing up for something that’s right. The protagonists in both stories, they have to take risks, and they’re both rewarded for taking those risks; on with his life, and the other with a stronger friendship. Even though the skydiver is risking his life, the protagonist in “Neighbours” had more gut to do what she had to do, where's…
The short story, A Temporary Matter, was a very sad and depressing story to read. A young married couple had just recently lost their baby and were unable to recover from this tragedy. It had left them isolated from the world and from each other. They lived together but never seemed to talk to one another or eat together anymore. It was almost as if they forgot each other’s existence.…
Ezeulo had a half brother by name Okeke Onenyi who had a grudge against Ezeulu becoming the Chief Priest of Umuaro. Ezeulu did not invite him for the ritual of the Covering-Up sacrifice for Obeka’s wife and allowed a worthless medicine man to perform the ritual. This itself proves that Ezeulu did certain acts of rituals because of social obligation and concern for his clan. It is because in the Ibo community parenthood is not a private concern and that is why he does not allow his half brother Okake Onenyi to perform the ceremony because in the community there existed a loud talk that he alone was responsible in the typing up the womb of Ezeulu’s first wife after she had borne him only three children. Further, such a man indulging in…
Sarah greeted me at the front desk then showed me to my cubicle. It was a pretty little corner with every tool you could imagine to fix a computer; the only thing that was missing was my computer. When I enquired about that, Sarah beamed at me and said “well that is your first task, to build your own computer, then start using it.” I gulped, before asking where the computer was. She pointed to it in a little corner and left me on my own to start work.…
