Background In this case, Sergeant Andrew Baxer retired from Town of Utopia Police Department. Sergeant Baxer was a part of Squad Z, he was one of the two sergeants assigned to this squad. Officer Durwood Wentworth of Utopia Police Department took the sergeants exam and successfully passed. Officer Wentworth is now one of the three candidates being considered for Sergeant Baxer’s position. Chief Barbara finally made her decision and promoted Wentworth to sergeant, and assigned him to Squad Z. Wentworth knew he would get the position, he worked hard and his coworkers had a high level of respect for him because he knew what he was doing. Sergeant Wentworth came to the Town of Utopia Police department as a young college graduate with a degree in criminal justice/public administration. No prior police experience. He was hired after passing the necessary test. Wentworth was twenty-eight with just five years on the job. With just five years he continued applied to identification officer and got the position. When the officers in the squad room ask him to tell a joke, he said that was not his responsibility and he was only there to give them their assignments. It was his first day as a sergeant and it seemed that he wanted to look tough to the members of Squad Z. He did not want to seem as a push over.
Solution
In order to improve the issue between Sergeant Wentworth and his officers, he would need to fulfill his job as a respected leader. His task was to give the members of the Z squad their patrol assignments and details of the day. Although, Sergeant Wentworth executed the task with no hesitation. He should have been more welcoming and try to get to know his squad members. He could have started to build a relationship with them.
