Some may say John Proctor is a type of tragic hero but to me he is not. John is a stupid man for not taking the chance to save not only himself but his wife and unborn child. But he didn’t he decided he wanted to try and be a hero and end up getting killed with the same people he try to save. I don’t think John Proctor is a tragic hero but a dumb one.…
He lost six years of his life that could have been spent with family and friends. The stories told in Just Mercy was so compelling that it was almost impossible not to shed tears for what the victims had to experience. The way the inmates with mental illness were treated was so cruel. The justice system should have had better programs to help them adjust, and offer more protection. In the same way, the women in prison deserves as much protection as the criminal justice system can be afford.…

Over the years Red is able to get Andy a rock hammer as well as a large poster. Utilitarianism is a normative philosophy of ethics that has been around since the late eighteenth century. It earliest proponents were Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. The general idea of utilitarianism is that there is no morality measurement except results. So, when one is deciding how to act, the only thing that matters is what the results of the actions are. Utilitarianism says that the actions that cause the most happiness and the least amount of unhappiness or pain are the moral acts.…
In the crucible, John Proctor is a tormented individual who cannot find himself to be a good person or a bad one. John had made mistakes in life that makes him seem like a bad man, but he also does good things for his community. He is a good man who had made mistakes in life, but he uses his good senses to do the right thing being a truthful christian. Johns Proctor first mistake is that he had an affair with Abigail williams and she soon falls in love with him. Abby had started framing people for witchcraft to try to get to John and was slowly going insane for him.…
In this news article, I will write why the Alabama governor, Robert J. Bentley, should improve life in jail for inmates using my Alabama Prison Safety Act (APSA). In Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson described how horrible it is for an inmate to live in prison and this sparked my interest to change the way inmates are treated. I am going to propose the Alabama Prison Safety Act which will make life in a jail cell the proper, and correct way for an inmate to live in. It will only be in effect in the state of Alabama. I do not question the job done by the judges in modern time, but in the past, judges in the south were often found openly racists.…

Among the three ethical theories studied in class, the utilitarian theory can be used in explaining ethical implications of Face Recognition technology. Chonko, Larry (1-5) describes various ethical theories. However, Chonko Larry (2) asserts that utilitarian ethical theory is based on the ability of an individual to predict the significance of an action. Action in this case study is using Facial Recognition technology in iPhone X. According to the theory, an option which results in the greatest benefit to most individuals is the one who is ethically right and correct.…
Ethics is the philosophical study of morality. In other words, it is the study of what is wrong and right, good or bad. Humanity has been intrigued with the answer to these subject matters for hundreds of years. In that time there have been several philosophers such as Aristotle who have formulated moral theories like Virtue ethics. Not all of these theories are put in practice today but they do help in the solving of moral issues.…
Utilitarianism is interesting because it takes primarily a consequentialist approach to ethic looking at the ends to something and looks at the pros or cons of an action, or what causes the most happiness versus the amount of generating pain from an action. Even though it sounds simple to compare the amount of happiness versus pain the equation that we have to use for utilitarianism does not always work the that it should and other flaws that we will go over in this essay taking an unusual stance on the matter, questioning the utility monster but also criticizes utilitarianism later but also saying that it is the best that we have currently have. The idea of a utility monster is not a valid objection against utilitarianism and can be worked…
Final Exam 1. In “A Critique of Utilitarianism”, Bernard Williams argues against the fundamental characteristics of utilitarianism and believes that the notion of ends justifying the means are a way of representing the doctrine of negative responsibility which can lead to consequences from the choices we make/do not make (663). As a result, we are all responsible for the consequences that we fail to prevent as well as the ones we brought upon ourselves. That is, in each case the choice on whether an action is right is determined by its consequences (661). Williams gives the example of killing one villager to save 19 others (664) in which he critiques the different principles of utilitarianism and integrity - the moral righteousness that is…
“Tradition is our security. And when our mind is secure, it is in decay,” laments Jiddu Krishnamurti wisely. While tradition is a solace to many, as Krishnamurti puts it, once outdated, it can result in the deterioration of society. And worse, perhaps, are the consequences faced by those who protest antiquated values. Set in a stereotypical American town and initially written with a joyful tone, “The Lottery” explores such paradoxical views on tradition shifting to a dark and sinister tone toward the end.…
Good and bad are absolute, there can be no middle ground when it comes to doing what is right. This is what people have been debating since the beginning of time. Unfortunately this methodology is flawed and outdated. Ethics is this large gray area, with no definite right decision that everyone can follow. Their are so many different philosophies and theories on what is the ethical right and wrong, that is hard for an average person to make a decision that will not be question or debated.…
Utilitarianism is one of the persuasive approaches to ethics in the history of philosophy. It is widely used by everyone on a daily basis but has barely gotten recognition it deserves. Utilitarianism was founded in Ancient Greece but was not popularly used until the 19th century when it was re-introduced by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. While both men are credited as two of the most influential people in the foundation of, what we now consider, ethical theory. The approach in which we utilize the theory to make decisions is different from each other.…
Bernard Williams’s example of the moral dilemma involving Jim killing the one individual to save 19 is an interesting one that provokes much thought and it is a decision that utilitarian followers would find quite easy. Utilitarian’s subscribe to the view that everything that you do or do not do should be for the sake of maximizing total happiness, or utility. But individuals who subscribe to a different moral philosophy could potentially have a myriad of ethical concerns associated with making such a decision. In this paper, I will explain the moral dilemma that is presented in Bernard Williams’s piece, hypothesize what the utilitarian would do in that situation, why they would choose to do that. I will also demonstrate why Williams’s dilemma provides valid evidence to reject utilitarianism on the grounds that it weakens a person’s integrity, sense of responsibility, and their moral character.…
