In essence, the United States advances, supports, and advocates for the idea of freedom. It is supposed to transcend local interests and prejudices. World and U.S. foreign policy could be the impetus to move the global community toward a more just world order (Thompson, 2003, p. 180). According to Thompson, a just world order that has its foundation on principle international policy may be a more stable base for peace and security. A salient goal of American foreign policy is to defend the independence of the U.S., as to allow it to govern according to its principles and pursue its interests. Through his non-violent resistance, this extraordinary man inspired a cornucopia of people in South Africa, his home of India, and the world. The racism he encountered in Africa was the start of a lifelong crusade to end injustices and bring about peace for people of all religions. Along his search he encountered many adversities, for instance, Gandhi was imprisoned for conspiracy for two years. Regardless, Gandhi never stopped his peaceful fight. Gandhi possessed an intelligence, determination, and a loving heart that transcended the senseless fighting between the Hindu’s and Muslim’s which allowed him to conceptualize and achieve a creative way to respond to the atrocities of war. He was willing to starve himself to death to awaken others to the potential of love and forgiveness, and the peace that could be achieved only by each side laying down their arms and not giving in to the primal desires for revenge and contempt.
