World hunger is a widespread issue concerning not only our moral obligation as humans, but also as a society. All human beings have dignity deserving of respect and are entitled to what is necessary to live in dignity, including a right to life and a right to the goods necessary to satisfy one's basic needs. Malnutrition is a condition of nutrient deficiency that steals the lives of thousands of people on a daily basis. This epidemic can easily be managed. The suffering and death that are occurring now are not inevitable, nor unavoidable.

A utilitarian approach states that we have a moral obligation to prevent harm when doing so would not cause harm to ourselves. Utilitarianism proposes that we should use the principle of utility to benefit all of humanity and that we should all be concerned with altruism, or practice selfless concern for others. The consequential theory brings about the question if helping underdeveloped nations would produce more harm or is it more beneficial. To reach universal altruism is the matter of an attempt to bring about as much happiness as possible in the world. Giving aid to underdeveloped nations would come with some sacrifice of luxuries from people of wealthy fortune, but it cannot be compared to the poverty that could be prevented. Minor sacrifices of wealthy nations can prevent substantial amounts of harmful conditions like malnutrition. As moral agents we have the ability to prevent these deaths without sacrificing anything of comparable significance.
Theorist Jeremy Bentham adapted the utilitarianism approach. He argued that morality is about making the world as happy as possible. Bentham relied on one ultimate moral principle known as the Principle of Utility.
