The utilitarian perspective appeals to the majority of people who are happy, even if that means there are a few individuals who are suffering because of the majority’s happiness. John Stuart Mill argues against the utilitarian perspective with his statement: We should maximize utility, not case by case, but in the long run. And over time, he argues, respecting individual liberty will lead to the greatest human happiness. Allowing the majority to silence dissenters or censor free- thinkers might maximize utility today, but it will make society worse off- less happy- in the long run (Sandel 50).
In other words, Mill’s believes that long term happiness comes from hearing everyone’s opinion and making decisions based off of what everyone thinks, not just the majority of people. Mill’s idea of long term happiness benefits human trafficking victims because individuals will not be suffering at their traffickers pleasure. Human trafficking may bring instant gratification to those who purchase the victims, but in the long run there is physical and psychological damage. Human trafficking is a terrible crime that preys on the vulnerability of individuals for a other individuals to benefit. Society is taking various steps to ensure that human trafficking comes to an end. They have implemented more laws that increase the risk human traffickers take when they take the freedom away from an individual for their own benefit. While, society has improved on ending human trafficking over the years, there still needs more to happen before we can end human trafficking. The organizations that provide services and support to victims help the victims regain respect and dignity by allowing them to feel normal with the resources provided. We should be focused on the long term effect. While majority of people choose the instant gratification choice, we should rethink our decisions that can affect the next generations.
