USC students are known to be involved. Briefly describe a non-academic pursuit (such as service to community or family, a club or sport, or work, etc.,) that best illustrates who you are, and why it is important to you. (250 word limit)

Most of the time, the preparation for baking is visually unpleasant, for instance, stirring cocoa powder, raw eggs, vanilla, and oil together in an attempt to make brownies from scratch. The bubbly combination of chemicals aggravated the nerves of my family; condemnation always comes before the final presentation is pulled out of the oven.

Especially when we passed by the famous architect Frank Gehry’s art, his proud exclamation of the design influenced my admiration on building structure and expanded to the aesthetic beauty. My imagination of future design started to form in a rotational 3D image inside my mind. Through the ACE mentorship program, my passion in architecture and engineering was affirmed when I first designed a museum like a professional architect.
In USC, the opportunity to study art and science classes together encourages me to be a creative problem solver in the engineering society. The offering major of civil engineering in building science brings architecture into the four years program, which provides me an artistic skill to draw sketches while having the ability to design structures in a technological side. Fulfilling both of my passion, USC is my top choice university for me to begin my future.

I still remember when I was seven years old and how my grandpa would come visit my grandma once or twice a week. I would be so happy to see him because he would always call me over and sit me down next to him so that we could watch the history channel together. We would sit there for hours and watch documentaries on everything imaginable. One documentary that I will never forget is one that we watched that was talking about how the Romans built the Colosseum and their aqueducts. That was when I first realized that I liked designing and how I liked seeing how buildings were designed and built.…

What makes I. M. Pei’s Everson’s museum an architectural success? Based of Lebbeaus Woods definition of architecture as, “the built realization of a particular concept, or idea. …the concept, or ideas, it embodies are formulated in a unique, and not merely generic, way”, I. M. Pei distinctively develops a concept of form using brutalism. The Everson Museum evokes a spark of interest for the viewer and at first glance the museum seems anticlimactic, but as the viewer enters the space and engages with their surroundings, the museum becomes a complexity of materials and spaces. The thought process to develop the structure is prevenient throughout, and I.M. Pei’s intentions for the building are prominent throughout the whole space.…

I believe I am fully qualified to become an Army Warrant Officer for many reasons. The first is that I feel I have reached a rank that marks the culmination of my operational career. At this stage in the Army as a Staff Sergeant, I continually fulfill duty positions that are above and beyond my pay grade in both the garrison and deployed environments. This is best exemplified in my recent deployment with 1st Special Forces Group in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. As a Staff Sergeant, I served as the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Iraq (CJSOTF-I) Counterintelligence (CI) Coordinating Authority, which is doctrinally a Chief Warrant Officer Three billet.…

During my employment at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston I was able to work with a graduate of MCPHS, Kaiming (Kyle) Chiang, MPAS, PA-C. His knowledge and comprehension of his role as well as his eagerness to always do more inspired me. Kyle’s professionalism and confidence led him to be a favorite among several patients; he was able to diagnose with confidence; and was able to communicate with the patients in a way that they would be able to understand. Kyle was always an advocate for MCPHS and as I continued to work with him I was able to see, not only his passion, but the knowledge he gleaned from his time at MCPHS. I knew that MCPHS was not only a school that prepared their students well for the workplace, but also teaches them in a manner where patient education and…

In 1987, a woman named Lillian Disney donated $50 million in order to construct a concert hall at the location of 111 South Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, California, in honor of her fallen spouse, Walt Disney. For the project, they hired 80 of the most intelligent minds in the art of architecture. Out of those 80, came architect Frank Gehry, whose imagination is very common with Walt Disney’s. His work has a sense of wonder and delight, similar to Disney’s movies. With this bursting imagination, he created a structure consisting of various lengths and curves of sheets of metal.…

All through my summer, I never felt at peace unless I was wrist-deep in dough. My worries would disappear when I closed the oven door and soon enough my motto became “stressed backwards is desserts.” For a while, I genuinely thought that I had a baking addiction. Ratios in recipes and conversions from cups to deciliters were ingrained into my head like my own name. That is until, one day, I bit into a vanilla and coffee cupcake and tasted only unexpected discontent.…

When I was taking my drafting and perspective class in summer, my professor has taught us that there are actually difference between interior architecture, interior design, interior decoration, and architecture, which is like a rag around architecture. I didn’t know there are such difference between those interior and architecture fields, and sometimes it is a lines blurring on this discussing topic, to define the role and responsivities of each profession. Although we have already known that interior design involved with architecture and technical aspects of interior design, and less involved with decorative, soft furnishings side.…
