Teaching English Language Lessons By Stylisti Simmons

Grammar can be a difficult concept to grasp for many. The English language itself is one of the most difficult languages to learn. There are so many rules as well as correct and incorrect ways to write. It is no shock that when teachers teach about grammar they do it in a way that isn 't fun. Simmons mentions that "many students when asked what their least favorite activity in language arts was, would respond with grammar instruction and practice"(pg. 387). She also says that "many teachers agree about this as well" (Simmons 387). In her article Responsible Grammar Rebels: Using the Hunger Games Trilogy to Teach the Intentional Sentence Fragment, Simmons uses the Hunger Games Trilogy by Collins to teach her students how sentence fragments can be used intentionally as a …show more content…
This is true not only in English language arts but for many other subjects like math, science, and social studies. The way Simmons uses the Hunger Games Trilogy to teach her lesson on the intentional sentence fragment is a way of incorporating trade books into her lesson. Alvermann mentioned the use of trade books by saying that they are "a strategy for using reading as a schema builder" (pg.180). Alvermann also states that "writing is a special kind of thinking and that when students write they must reflect on what they know" (pg. 180). This was very evident when Simmons described examples of her students ' writings. She noticed that after teaching her students about the intentional sentence fragment as a stylistic choice in writing, many of her students began to use it in their writing for various assignments. In order for students to incorporate intentional sentence fragments in their writing they had to really reflect on what they knew about intentional sentence fragments to figure out how to properly use it in their

After reading the article by Kyle Wiens, I actually felt quite troubled, unproportionally so for its harmless subject matter. Based on the article, Wiens almost seems to have a haughty air about him, in my opinion. I cannot exactly pinpoint at which particluar section of the article leads me to have this impression, but I believe just the general idea of the article that is not hiring qualified people based on their grammar skills), and the fact that Wiens is a self-proclaimed "grammar stickler" is what I find irksome. While I know that good grammar is extremely important, I also know that grammar, in any language, is arbitrary. So when I read about people placing quite a lot of value into grammar, I frankly find it annoying and find said people to be overly condescending.…

Final Exam Essay Prompt: Write about what, specifically, you are going to do with your new found knowledge. They say knowledge comes from experiences, and the experiences this past year have shed a different light on my world. Our actions are direct effects of the world surrounding us, causing every choice I now make to direct, and redirected by many of the recent things we have learned. From grammar rules to discussion points, and the words of our various authors, I have gained new perspective because each lesson has taught me something new, and often it was about myself even more so than the assignment.…

The problem with this is that “… some teachers worry, they may lose ability to do so in writing” (souce). Although these complains are logical, there teachers failed to research different variables. The automatically assumed that the students were struggling with grammar because of texting. It could be that they do not have a full understanding of where commas should be placed. In a more broad range, the teachers made the assumption that all the students use text messaging.…

Literacy Narrative I did a lot of writing while I was in the tenth grade. The English teacher I had at the time was the best when it came down to writing. I did not have too much interest in writing at the time but Mrs. Perez changed that, she gave me a new perception on writing and how it can change society. Mrs. Perez would always recommend really good books, one of which was a book called “His Dark Materials”. This story is about a young girl and her allies, fight for the discover of a dark substance called the “Dust”.…

The author also presents a possible argument to his point of view that will be addressed later in the article: “Isn’t grammar really a thing of the past, and isn’t the new idea to communicate in any way as long as you can make yourself understood” (Simon 334)? This is an idea that some members of his intended audience might agree with, which encourages them to read on to find out what makes that idea so wrong. The goal of Simon’s use of the rhetorical question is to really open the mind of the reader in order to more effectively promote his ideas later in the article. This way, the reader is slightly groomed before being exposed to evidence that supports John Simon’s…

A few years ago I was asked by my department chair to teach an English Language Development (ELD) class. As I had only been teaching for a year, I was unfamiliar with the full requirements of the class and nervous to take on what I felt was a BIG responsibility. Once I accepted our dean of curriculum asked me to be the ELD advisor. I took two days to decide that with my family background, my grandfather picked fruit for a living and my mom picked and packed growing up, I could make the students understand that working hard in school and continuing their education post high school could help them get more out of life than merely staying at a menial job. My first year was difficult.…

The focus in this paper will be based on English Language Learners (ELL). A thesis statement expresses your unique insight or way of explaining a subject and often forecasts how you will develop and organize your text." A good thesis statement will lead right into the introduction. "The introduction comes first for the reader, but not necessarily first for the writer.…
