“Aided by the convenience and constant access provided by mobile devices, especially smartphones, 92% of teens report goi ng online daily — including 24% who say they go online “almost constantly.” With new technologies, and a faster paced world, our society has turned away from proper grammar and writing style while using social media and texting. It is now uncommon to see a well-structured sentence or thought out idea when engaging in conversation with another person. For instance, twitter. Twitter only allows the user to incorporate what they want to say with a maximum of one hundred forty characters. With such a small allowance, one cannot get their ideas out using proper form. Instead, they turn to abbreviations, emojis and slang words. For those saying this doesn’t really affect our culture, the Oxford dictionary has proven them wrong. Oxford dictionary has once again determined its “word” of the year. Instead of something that actually is composed of letters of the alphabet, the Oxford dictionary has determined that the word of the year should be an emoji, a useless image describing our feelings so we don’t have to write them out. It beat out words like lumbersexual and on fleek; what a world we live in. The “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji was officially the first emoji added to the list of words of the year. It was picked because Oxford dictionary believed it was the best word that described the feeling of the population of 2015, the best word. Isn’t it ironic…
