Class can be measured based on ones activities. I feel that this is a more accurate determining factor being a part of the New York City community because although someone making $38,000 is considered part of the middle class, it is exceptionally difficult to survive with that net income. A questionnaire that inquiries about the type of home (condo, house, rental etc.) location of said home, job prestige, recreational activities, shopping habits and dining habits allows for insight into an individual’s true social class. Currently net salary is used as the basis determining social class. This is not the best classification because while $38,000 allows you to lead the life of a lower middle class individual in Bozeman, Montana it is impossible to do the same in New York City. Swimming is a common sport that has been polarized around the world through mediums such as the Olympics. According to the Associated Press, “Nearly 60 percent of African-American children cannot swim, almost twice the figure for white children, according to a first-of-its-kind survey which USA Swimming hopes will strengthen its efforts to lower minority drowning rates and draw more blacks into the sport.” (Associated Press) Why is it that so many Black and African American children are unable to swim? It cost too much money. Swimming is an expensive sport to undertake. You need to pay a coach, maintain a pool or gym membership, and continually purchase expensive swimming gear to combat the degradation that occurs due to the harshness of chlorine.
