Using Rhetorical Strategies For Persuasion

I focused on the ethos of my credibility and character as discussed in “Using Rhetorical Strategies for Persuasion.” Considering if I were to submit my personal statement for an actual job opening, I would want to be prepared for follow on questions or requests to validate the information I provided.

I believe Jon Ronson effectively uses rhetorical strategies in his interview, however, there are flaws as well. In the podcast, “The Spokesperson”, a London reporter, Jon Ronson, uses rhetorical strategies to report a story told by Rachel North. North was a victim of a train bombing that happened in London in 2005. She decided to share what became a controversial story on her blog page about her experiences on the train that day. In his report, Ronson uses rhetorical strategies to sway listeners to believe North’s side of the story.…

When giving a speech many speakers use different methods to keep their audience involved and listening. Methods are often used to make the speech easy to focus on. Martin Luther King, Bill Clinton, and George Bush all used the method of “Call to action.” In their speeches Clinton used the method the best. Martin Luther King’s use of “call to action” was seen in paragraph 10 when he said “…Go back to the slums and ghettos of our norther cities knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.”…

The Democratic and Republicans debates covered an array of several contentious issues regarding the well-being of the United States with diverse opinions and thoughts for the American people. The prominent rhetorical devices used in both political debates were evident, such as, repetition; ridicule and innuendo were among the many used during both presidential debates. Over the course of human history, advertising has been an art that many have perfected. The basic structure of advertising consists of pathos, ethos, and logos. Appealing to the public’s emotions, logic, and credibility has proven to be the most effective way of persuasion. The commercial I have chosen to analyze is about a worldwide cataclysm, incited by God’s inability to immediately charge a cell phone. His frustration has led to an apocalypse full of peculiar season changes and various other incidents.…

It’s no longer a secret that we do not have the full control over our personal decision-making process. Even though we often say the last word about situations that directly influences our circumstances, it would be inaccurate to claim that other agents’ opinions and persuasion techniques do have any impact on our actions. In fact, we are constantly being persuaded into tasting meals that otherwise would not be on our plate by corporate companies, politicians, and even our own family members and friends. Carol Tavris, a social psychologist that often appears in credible news sources such as the New York Times and the Scientific American, explores this phenomenon through her article “Want to Get People to ‘Yes’? Follow the Lessons of Robert…

When looking up examples of smart public relations campaigns by companies, one of the more interesting examples that I found was with a company called Innocent Drinks. Looking at the about section of Innocent’s website entitled “our story”, the company sums up both their tone in how they communicate with their audience and what they do by writing “hello we’re innocent …and we're here to make it easy for people to do themselves some good (whilst making it taste nice too),” (our story). The company, which sells a variety of products including smoothies, also continues the tone later by writing “Since then we've started making coconut water, juice and kids' stuff, in our quest to make natural, delicious, healthy drinks that help people live well…

advertisement but also on a person as it was not common to have brightly colored lips at the time. Another likely reason red was chosen was because it signifies courage, sexuality, love and pleasure. Red is often used to evoke erotic feelings, and MAC would have used it to try and lift the stigma on the disease and direct their mantra of “diversity, acceptance and celebrating” the individual at those affected by HIV/AIDS (Benoit). In order to properly analyze the advertisement using rhetorical appeals, it is helpful to define rhetoric and to introduce the definitions from Writing Today by Johnson-Sheehan and Paine.…

Thinking deeply about the arbitrary and conventional nature of language and the importance and power of rhetorical strategy impacts my understanding of the writing act. It would help me to understand what I’m reading better. Also, it would be more clear to read the essay than the one without the rhetorical strategy. Rhetorical strategies are Logos, Pathos, Ethos and the essay will be based on one of the appeals. I would know if the essay is about logos it would be something based on logic so it would give me an idea of what to think about when I’m reading the essay.…

I set goals at the beginning of this class - goals I wanted to achieve by the end of this semester. After looking back at the sheet of paper where these goals were written on, I realized that they had all been accomplished. Also, after reviewing the essays I wrote before, I noticed that the most recent essays had gotten better and more improved. My goals created at the beginning of this semester when this class began were to improve my vocabulary and mechanics, learn to use citations, stay on focus, and have fun, rather than looking at writing essays as a school assignment that has to be done. Some skills have improved more than others, but in an overall outlook, all the skills I wanted to improve on had gotten noticeably better.…

I worked as a principal and it is important for any principal that you are able to succeed in persuading a person to act in a certain way. Persuasive efforts are effective only or mainly when they seek to build upon already existing values and beliefs and are much less effective when we try to change people's values or create new ones for them. I believe that I have to use both depending upon the situation that I am addressing. Persuasion is a form of power that relies exclusively on words to influence another to change. That change may affect beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors.…
