Special project for Learning Experience 3 assigned in Philosophy 1123 requires students to complete a creative controversy. When approaching a controversial subject, we should look at all opinions regarding the subject with our creative problem solving skills. If we engage in conversations with those with opposite opinions we can develop our collaborative learning skills, learn to practice tolerance, and with time become better communicators. All of these skills are characteristics of a good critical thinker. This project tasks us to look at both sides of the controversial subject arguing whether or not pornography should be protected as free speech. The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for redress of grievances.” When there are differing interpretations of what is considered the most important document in the history of our country, the Constitution, it is left up to the courts to decide if a particular interpretation is legal, and in accordance with the court’s interpretation of the constitution and its amendments.
