Negative Reinforcement On Fixed Interval Schedule

Improved Essays
In order to change my current behavior to my goal behavior, I am going to use negative reinforcement on a fixed interval schedule. Every Monday through Thursday when I get home, I will go over my lecture notes for 30 minutes for all 5 classes with breaks in between of every 30 minute sessions of 10 minutes, for the remaining of the 2016 Spring semester, and if I do not meet the required amount of time, I am not allowed to use my cellphone for one hour which will immediately happen upon failing to meet the time limit.
In one study which demonstrates how effective negative punishment is, Donaldson, Vollmer, Yakich, and Camp (2013) conducted an experiment that consisted of 6 school aged children, who showed behavioral problems either at home or at school. Behavioral problems include not following playground and house rules, such as, pushing or hitting other children, and not listening to adults’ instructions. However, the short term consequence is that I can use this strategy for the rest of the 2016 Spring semester, which will be useful when I have to complete essays, study guides, and study for finals. Even though, there is only a short term consequence of obtaining my goal behavior I can still achieve it by following my behavior change strategy of using negative punishment with a fixed time interval schedule. These studies support the use of negative punishment because I am taking away something that is pleasurable for me, which is my cell phone. The studies also support the use of a fixed time interval schedule by showing how it can increase a behavior thus this type of schedule will increase my ability to go over my notes for the full 30

Punishment verses Rewards The use of positive reinforcement has a much better outcome than if punishment were to be used, This was the idea of B.F. Skinner, a well-known psychologist from the 1970’s who enlightened the world with his behavioral techniques. Skinner believed that the use of positive reinforcement helped to shape a beings behavior verses punishment. He proved his theory when he trained his rats to push a lever by frequent and scheduled rewards and birds to peck plates using his positive reinforcement ideas. He wanted to take his knowledge of positive reinforcement and apply it to mankind and to improve mankind’s behavior and learning technique.…

Children who have testified to being physically disciplined, admitted to feeling fear, anger and sadness towards their parents which results in their inability to internalize their parent’s disciplinary tactics. Not only do they tend to distrust their parents, they will also attribute hostile intentions to others which increase the possibility that they will behave antagonistically in all their social interactions. For changing my behavior, operant conditioning, which is when I gave myself a negative punishment, seemed to help decrease my behavior. Since I really wanted my reward of candy at the end of the day I didn’t bit my nails. Positive reinforcement is another way that could have helped for influencing my behavior. When I acknowledged that I was not biting my nails and they were placed in my lap, it would have been effective to reward myself. Instead of looking forward to a reward at the end of the day I would have been looking forward to a reward every time I was taking a test.…

The use of physical discipline as a parenting technique has been a controversial topic for our most recent generations. The evolution of physical punishment, beginning with our ancestors to now, has changed because of the findings from research studies conducted by psychologists over time. The use of spanking has been proven to have short-term and long-term effects on children for many reasons. The least detrimental way of gathering this information is through practical research in the form of questionnaires, surveys, interviews, observations and discussion groups. Undoubtedly, it would be unethical and even immoral if we conducted randomized experiments with control groups that manipulated the independent variable, which would be to have the parent spank or hit their child, and get the dependent variable, which would be the effect of the physical punishment, in order to gather data on the immediate outcome.…

Corporal punishment in children is often defined as, “use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain, but not injury, for the purposes of correction or control of the child’s behavior” (Frechette, Zoratti, & Romano, 2015). I chose this topic because as a child growing up I would receive spankings, hit with a belt, and other forms of physical punishment. In my case it was never intended as physical abuse but to make sure what behavior I did was to not happen again. When I would receive this punishment from either of my parents I would often cry and be in emotional distress for the time period following the punishment. Even though I grew up without any negative long term psychological effects due to corporal punishment,…
