Math Misconceptions

Improved Essays
In fourth grade various new math ideas are presented and many students can face difficulties when new material is introduced. Difficulties are especially displayed when it comes to discovering decimals. Although decimals are introduced in fourth grade they are continuously presented in math thereafter. One common misconception held about decimals is the idea that the more digits that are presented in a $#$#0$#$#, the greater the value of the number. An example of this is students believing that 3 is less than 0.7648 when this is definitely not the case. This misconception is related to Mariam Small’s third big idea where it is stated that by something about mathematical objects/relationships may become more noticeable if it is represented in …show more content…
One main reason why it is crucial to address these misconceptions is because the way in which students understand and learn math at a young age becomes the foundation for their understanding in the future. More complicated ideas in math build upon the basics that students learn in elementary school therefore, if they have skewed perspective or understanding at a young age, when they go on to learning more complicated ideas such as algorithms and formulas they will not be able to effectively understand them. Not only is this an important aspect for their future in math but also for their future in other subjects for instance science. If, for example, students are unable to understand the value of decimal numbers, when they are in science class and have develop an understanding of the data they collected from an experiment, they will most likely be unable to do so if they cannot understand what the numbers represent. The misconceptions they develop in math class at a young age can also become a hindrance to them in their future lives. Namely, if they have a misconception with decimals, it can impact their understanding of money. For example they need to receive $3.00 cash back and someone offers them $0.25 instead they will believe that they are receiving more money than what is owed to them however, that is not the case and can potentially lead to an immense amount of debt. For the same reasons listed above, these misconceptions can affect students in their future careers providing them the inability to interpret, collect or make use of information. In the end it is evident that if misconceptions in math are not addressed at a young age, there are many repercussion that could

Part B Diagnostic Interview and Tutoring Sessions Permission was granted (Appendix A) to interview and tutor Athena*, who is a 9 year old student in Year 4 who returned to Australia in the middle of Year 3, after living in the United States for 5 years. The Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) was conducted on a weekend afternoon at Athena’s home shortly after lunch (Australian Catholic University, 2011b). She did not seem to be nervous and was informed that the purpose of the questions was to help a pre-service teacher learn and develop some effective ways of teaching through the follow up tutoring sessions. Athena began the MAI confidently and could read, write (on the calculator) and order two digit numbers with ease.…

The question the author is trying to answer is: Why people believe that they aren’t a “math person”? In the article, the authors explain how not being a “math person” is a myth and just a statement for people who don’t work hard enough in their classes. Many students who thought they were born dumb or that math was an inborn talent were told that their intelligence was in their hands, and that their “IQ itself can improve with hard work.” This being said, it is important to convince students that they can make themselves smarter by hard work, because this increases intellect, which leads to higher grades. Also, it is important that people know that not being a “math person” is a myth, because like it says in the article, “math skills are increasingly important for getting good jobs these days—so believing you can’t learn math is especially self destructive.”…

Many people have different opinions about what they think about math. For instance, I looked up opinions people said about math and most of them were negative. One person stated: “I know a lot of people don’t like it. For me, I was good at the subject, but I didn’t really enjoy it.” In the story “Why is Math so important for kids to learn?” by Elise Wile, the author’s attitude toward Math is interested for these reasons: (1) she explains how it teaches logical and critical thinking, (2) she explains how it teaches life skills, and (3) she also explains how it supports continuing education and careers.…

Appropriately specific brief summary of MCK Test results. It was during week three that I completed the Mathematical Content Knowledge (MCK) test for the purposes of determining my level of understanding relating to certain mathematical concepts, such as multiplication, division, addition, and place value (Curtin, 2014). Before starting, I felt overly confident in my ability to successfully answer all the questions within the quiz, however, it was not until I skimmed through the questions that I began to think otherwise. The beliefs in myself concerning mathematics is one of duality: I know that I am more than capable of solving complex questions, yet I am also conscious of my lacking motivation behind the subject itself which stems from…

Only after much experience can they begin to generalize abstract principles of math. A study was done in Brazil on what the researchers called “street math” -- the astonishingly dextrous math skills people have when solving problems in the context of everyday situations. The researchers studied children who sold coconuts in the streets to support their families. For example, they asked a young vendor how much four coconuts would cost at 35 cruzeiros each. The child could quickly calculate the total price by taking the more familiar price of three coconuts and adding 35 cruzeiros for an additional coconut to get 140 cruzeiros.…
