He should be aware about culture and perception of the audience if he wants his jokes to be effective. Anthony L. Audrieth, in his article titled “The Art of Using Humor in Public Speaking,” explains why the use of one or two jokes in a speech is helpful to get the audience to be more engaged. He states, “If you are there to educate, a judicious use of humor in your talk will keep the audience with you, always waiting for the next gem. Their attention will be to you and your message.” Holt makes his audience laugh when he quotes other philosophers so he must know his audience very well because his jokes effective. Just like in Ellen DeGeneres speech, humor really helped the speaker connect with the audience. His humor really helped make his speech interesting and engaging. However, he assumes a funny thought that God might have. Jim Holt said that God could have asked Himself, “Where do I come from?” This made the audience laugh. However, there might have been some people in the audience that are not confortable when other people talk about religion and God so playfully. So Holt also has to be careful to not offend anyone. And for the most part, he does a really good job at using his Humor when most at the right times. He keeps using humor constantly so that he doesn’t lose the audience. If leaves a big gap of talking time without using humor, the next time he makes a joke, it would be hard for the audience to laugh.
