Genograms are important diagrams that helps identify relationships among family members (Nichols, 2013, p.85). It is important for a therapist to be able to relate to the experience of creating a diagram. Nichols (2013) notes that “genograms is used to trace relationship, conflicts, cut offs and triangles”(p.95). As a therapist you need to be able to help families identify those conflicts and patterns of behavior within their family. McGoldrick & Carter (2001) notes that a genogram “it is especially useful for understanding the motion of family patterns over time and the intersection of the client’s life and system with these patterns”(p.288).
