This diagram illustrates a Local Area Network implemented using an Ethernet connection on a bus topology model. It is a LAN because there is no indication of considerable distance between the computers or departments. It is in Bus topology as since the computers connect to the network by connecting to the network cable. This as opposed to a star network topology setup.
Next to each network component is an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Each IP consists of four number whose value can range from 0 to 255. This four numbers are separated by period marks (, 2000-2016). No number can be repeated on the same LAN sharing the same subnet mask making it an effective way of uniquely ‘naming’ each component in the network. As the computers and components communicate by sending packets of information to each other, an IP address identifies the sender and intended recipient for all network traffic. Its by deciphering this codes that each component is able to identify and accept traffic that has been sent to it and in return is able to send data to others the same way. In a nutshell, this numbers when coupled other identifying numbers such as the IP host and subnet mask act like mailing addresses bringing order to an otherwise very complicated process (Microsoft Corp., 2016).
