One of the main downsides to electronic communication is that it lacks a personal touch that other forms of communication, such as face-to-face conversations or phone conversations have. Some messages are best left untyped. If you are working hard on forming a strong, positive relationship, then you need to personally visit with that person and take the time to write personal hand-written letters. A second downside of using electronic means to communicate with is that it is easier for misunderstandings to occur. For example, when using email it may not be easy for the receiving party to identify when a joke is being made or whether the sender is serious. However, this rarely happens when a message is conveyed face-to-face or over the phone when you can hear each other’s tone of voice. A third con of using electronic communication is that it is one of the most common ways for viruses to travel and infect computers. It is often too late before you discover a virus had plagued your system and wiped out everything, and they can be forwarded to a mass amount of people easily spreading havoc on them as well. One of the main duties of a principal is to ensure that all of the important information about the school is being communicated to the parents and community, and the various media outlets are being fully utilized to reach as many stakeholders as possible. Thus, the principal should carefully plan all of his or her media communications by deciding what the purpose is and what the design layout is each time, as well as think about the three types of readers and what will appeal to each type. The principal should also assess the quality of professional development the staff and faculty has received in regards to the benefits of media communications and how to best utilize it. Where weaknesses or incorrect beliefs are found, the principal should provide the employees training and assistance so they, too, will be comfortable using electronic communications and choosing which one to use.
